I have never had a problem with any mac pro I have owned
Obviously there is some risk, but the reward is sizable

Once this proc is available, this will be a common upgrade theme - i bet in a year or two there will be long threads on the performance increase

The geekbench:price ratio of this upgrade is truly a great ratio.

It is a great reason to get the 2.8 quad now, and if one's needs increase over the years, one can get a much higher clock speed in the future.

Going from a 9000 geekbench to a 14000 geekbench is amazing for the cost of this upgrade. It can assure that your MP will be useful for 5-6 years.

Remember, the 2006 mac pro, was only surpassed in 2010 by the macbook pro benchmarks. In other words, the desktop can last for years before the laptops catch up. And the resale value of the desktops is really really good.

Overall, this thread is truly encouraging, one of the more valuable threads out there on MR

OWC could make some coin by offering this upgrade for just the 2010 quad 2.8. i would pull my tray and ship it off in a heartbeat. if the price made sense maybe 675.00 to 750.00 they keep the q 2.8 cpu

the only issue I see is that I bet OWC could charge 1100+ for the upgrade and that would be hard for some to pay almost double the price of parts for the service. Notice how much their other packages are vs the cost of the CPU.

Thoughts on the refresh...

Any thoughts on when the refresh of processors will drop for the MP?
And this talk of SandyBridge? I thought those were for laptops, not desktops....
Anyway.... We are overdue! If its going to be more than 6 months, I might as well jump in for a 2010 2.8Quad, and upgrade the proc in a few years as needed...

I wouldn't expect a Mac Pro refresh before Q1 2012.

Both. However the Sandy Bridge Xeon's suitable for use in the Mac Pro aren't expected till late this year.

A refresh early this year is unlikely unless Apple think's putting Light Peak in Mac Pros would justify having a spec bump not a move to a newer generation of processors (a normal Mac Pro update).

So late this year or early next year would be when the next update is likely. For me the optimum time to buy would probably be early next year, so I'm hoping the specs and price then will be to my liking.
