Will the iPad be for sale at 12:01 am on the morning of the 12th, or at just some random time on the 12th? How has Apple handled other presales?

Apple will update the store to accept orders sometime on the 12th. We don't know when. It's typically around 9AMish EDT. But we really don't know and won't until it's happened.

iPad preorder shipping question

Does anyone know if you preorder an iPad will it ship fedex to be delivered on April 3rd? Trying to figure out if I should have it shipped or reserve one for pickup in Apple store. I really don't want to fight crowds.

Yes, Fedex delivers on Saturdays. Officially it is available with FedEx Priority Overnight (shipment on a Friday) and FedEx 2-Day (shipment on a Thursday) in the majority of US cities. But Apple, obviously, could get some special treatment.

My memory is that Apple ships all these must-have pre-order products using Priority Overnight (with no extra charge for the service). They stage them around the country for shipment in the days leading up to release.

Delivery on launch day has been the case in the past, but then again Apple hasn't launched on a Sat. in a very long time, and I don't think every with a major h/w product.

FedEx delivers on Sat, but at extra cost. We'll have to see whether Apple negotiated for Sat delivery for the iPad b/c its not part of Apple's normal FedEx contract. If you order a stock item from the Apple store FedEx Express and it ships out Fri, it's delivered on Mon, not Sat.

OTOH FedEx Ground delivers on Sat as regular service. However, for Apple to ship FedEx Ground the iPads would have to be in the US, not China. Normally launch products are drop shipped direct from China to buyer.

Alternatively, the iPads could be delivered on Friday, a day ahead of regular store launch.

At any rate we'll find out tomorrow.

Anyone know what you need to give Apple to reserve an ipad for pick up at an Apple store, i.e. whether you need to give them a credit card number or whether you actually buy it before hand and then just pick it up or buy it after you get to the store?

My iPhone 3GS arrived on launch day via UPS.
I was actually out of town and figured they'd just toss it back on the truck for Monday, but no, UPS tried to deliver twice that day and left half a dozen messages on my phone before finally leaving it with a neighbor at about 8pm. When I called the UPS guy back, he said Apple paid extra and that they would attempt to deliver all weekend if necessary.

Hmmm....definitely a problem for me, because I'll be instructing them to ship it to my office. No one (in the Mail Dept.) is here on Saturday. Too much opportunity for theft.

i am still keeping my fingers crossed that tomorrow you will be able to pre-order them on amazon and possibly best buy instead of just the apple store.

I'm still going with my theory that they deliberately chose a Saturday to ensure more people would pre-order to pick up at a store, thus creating more hype, foot traffic and accessory sales at the stores. I mean they could just have easily chosen the following Monday in which case weekend delivery would be a non-issue.

I noticed this article popped up on my ipad news search just now; they act like they actually know some of the shipping details but I haven't seen any other mainstream sites/blogs pick it up.

Numerous Apple representatives have confirmed that the situation for the iPad is the same. Apple intends that customers who pre-order the iPad will receive their iPad on April 3rd.

But it doesn't comment on the fact that the 3rd is a Saturday.

(I am not affiliated with the above or any other site, just a lurker getting twitchy over pre-ordering, and not wanting to stand in line at the mall.)

And my attempts at not looking like a shill get blown out of the water. :)

It does now. :) Apple has again confirmed the Saturday delivery.

Not that I don't believe you but a link to an Apple statement, press release, etc. would go miles to ending speculation and confirm pre-order is def. the way to go.

That's the thing, I'm not a shill, never saw the site till today. :) Since I'm new to the forum I was hesitant about posting links to a blog I hadn't heard of in my opening post; and then, well, you see what happened.

ANYWAY. I'm excited about the iPad and a technophile; but new to Apple launches and just slightly too old to be excited about standing in line. (And yet obsessed enough that I probably will if it comes down to it.)

I ain't gunna stand in line! :p

(Orlando's Favorite Tourist mall..... on Easter Weekend - are they NUTS?????? NEvermind my 41yo body would rebel!)

If the kid doesn't get hers until Monday, so be it. She has waited for it since her birthday Feb 2 - she can wait a few more days if needed. Mean mommy huh????
