Why not just use APN? It's far easier than calling AT&T. It only takes about 5 seconds to do. Also, AT&T could remote the WIX block at any time and you wouldn't know.

I'm not sure how you are changing your APN but it's a simple one time process. All you do is go to http://unlockit.co.nz/ on your iphone and install the profile.

I highly recommend you do this even if you are getting a WIX block.

I'm using that exact same APN changer you mention above on the 3G. AT&T still sent that text message today though, saying I had 'til Sept. 13th or something to settle up since they discovered I was using an iPhone without a data plan.

So even WITH that APN changer that I've used on both the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G, AT&T still figured it out.

I'm hoping the combination of BOTH the APN Changer *and* calling AT&T to disable data will do the trick.

Or it's back to a RAZR, which won't be fun for the spouse...I don't know what else to do.

Changing methods will not stop AT&T from finding out. As soon as you put the SIM back in the iPhone, they will know you have an iPhone. Yes, they may send txt messages about not having a data plan - however in my experience and from what I have read about on the web, they will not actually do it.

EDIT: Yes, i've heard that they are now putting deadlines on people. This is new to me, so they may very well be cracking down. I have not received the txt yet but am keeping well aware.

Unless somebody figures out how to change the IMEI number (which hasn't been since the old 1.x firmware and even then it wasn't a "real" change; not to mention it's highly illegal), there's no way around it.

Wow.

Ok...this is pretty discouraging.

Am now debating whether or not to try the RAZR SIM switch/deactivate data/re-insert SIM into iPhone 3G or break the bad news that she just can't use the iPhone 3G anymore. I certainly don't want to start paying for a data plan that will NEVER be used.

Just don't know what to do...

Just ignore any texts and u should be good. If they add it in call and cancell it while your sim is in a noniphone cell.
And then tell her to stop using it. I think it's just scare tacticts by At&t. They won't do squat.

It is done.

Just got off the phone w/ AT&T. Turned off what an email called "MediaNET," both on the phone itself and via a computer (i.e. buying a RAZR app online and then using the phone to download said paid app).

So all data is now OFF on that phone line that I was using the iPhone 3G (JB/unlocked) on.

Now my debate is:

Should I wait until after the date AT&T gave my wife in a text message to pop the SIM back out of the RAZR and back in to the iPhone 3G, or is it "safe" to do so now?

I haven't read any reports anywhere of AT&T "doing anything about it," but don't want to get back charged or penalized or anything...

What do you think?

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard in my life. AT&T will *NOT* charge an ETF for not having a data plan.

Honestly, where do you people think such stupid s*** up?

Agree with you 100%. From personal experience ATT will NOT charge you for cancelling data plan early. I cancelled the data plan on one of my 3gs like 3 weeks after getting my iphone. They were even going to give me credit for the days I had the data plan. I told them that I didn't have the iphone anymore, which I didn't because I sold it. I wish I would've j/b to see if they added the data plan.

so what is the final word?

I am about to go 3Gs on the ATT via upgrade and dont want the data plan...what is the suggested procedure!

Same

I just received the text to call 611 about the data plan too, after you switched the sim to the razr and called att did you mention that you received the text regarding the iphone?

No. I didn't say a word about that text message. I called from the RAZR. I *did* say that I did receive a "strange" text message about something that didn't apply to me at the time, and to be safe, please turn off all data access on this line.

I just turned off ALL data to that line, and am tentatively planning on waiting to put the SIM back in the iPhone until after Sept. 14th.

Don't want to take any chances. Not sure if it's a big deal, but I think we'll just keep the SIM in the RAZR for now, and after that weekend, put it back & see what happens. As of right now, the IMEI/picture of the RAZR is associated with the number that has used the JB/unlocked iPhone 3G in the past. May leave well enough alone for the next few weeks.

We'll see.

How does AT&T know?

What are the options available for an unlocked iPhone?

If AT&T starts charging on the 14th, there's gonna be many hundreds of thousands of former AT&T wireless customers soon after.
