Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you use the iPad as a companion for your dslr photo sessions? I don't know too much about the iPad as far as integrating it with this usage though, so any comments? I have a small budding portraiture studio and I go on location sometimes and was wondering if the iPad would be, or could be a good companion.

With the SDCARD companion adaptor thing, can you upload your shots from your sdcard from your camera, straight into the iPad and fetch them later for editing in Photoshop? I was thinking the iPad would be absolutely killer for using on shoots! Upload the photos to it, and then turn it around and show the client. Delete shots, etc and then edit them later pulling them off the ipad.

Is that do-able? I would rather lug around the iPad more so than my macbook if I could. I just didn't know if this workflow was possible. There is an iPhoto on the iPad? Can it import images and it won't do anything to them, resize or compress them or anything? Anyways sorry about the questions :D . I just was really thinking I could use the thing, and I heard the display was super nice. Plus I could use it as a tote around portfolio!

Comments? :D

yes you can do that certainly

i did the exact thing on my vacation no too long ago

uploaded all photos from my Nikon d5000 to my ipad, removed the photos i didnt need and then removed them from the sd card, then synced the ipad to my macbook and all the photos were in my albums in iphoto

so it worked quite well

Okay cool. So a purchase for me would be quite justified. Thanks for your input. I just thought it would be really neat to be able to do that, and have the thing to maybe do light browsing and movie watching in bed! ahahha AWESOME. So when I can I am going to start saving for one. I'm really stoked about this now! I just started buying all my lighting for my little studio and was thinking of things I could do to really wow some clients.

A lot of people in Southern Utah really have not been exposed to the iPad and if they could check their photos on it, that would be rad.

Anyone else have any experience with this? Looking forward to hearing more input!

Any have a wifi module on their Canon (40D here)? If so, can transfer on the fly to iPad? If so, any options like keeping the raw on the camera and sending the large jpeg to iPad? Also, performance, any delay on the shoot buffer?

Could all of the above be also done tethered to camera kit, ie, with iPad connected while shooting?

I'd love the full circle. Shoot >>wifi>> iPad for preview, crop >>wifi>> Print

Little league baseball, here i come!

:p

Jeeze that is a good workflow right there if it is possible. I've been wondering about those little wifi SDCARDS in the Apple Store. They have an endless mode they say so you can shoot and shoot till your finger hurts ahah.

Little league! heheh :D I can't wait to buy a nice telephoto lens to cover some local sports stuff! Little kids are fun to take pictures of while they play sports, the faces they make are fantastic. So much concentration! LOL.

Okay. So I would have to shoot in jpeg. I like what you said about saving the best at ipad resolution and having a presentation ready album.

You don't have to shoot JPEG, just pick a picture style you like and shoot raw. What you will see on the iPad is the sidecar JPEG attached to the raw image when its made.

Interesting, I haven't got the adaptor but it says it supports raw?

Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit
The iPad Camera Connection Kit gives you two ways to import photos and videos from a digital camera: using your camera’s USB cable or directly from an SD card. iPad and the Camera Connection Kit support standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW.

That's pretty cool! I was seriously thinking about getting one of those cards anyways and using it with my Macbook. So if I have a little Eye-fi card, (with the canon firmware update) I can shoot and shoot in endless mode and have it go to my Macbook (having it create a wireless network)?

The iPad is now the ultimate tool for any artist or photographer. Every photo looks beautiful on the giant display. I only wish you could use the USB camera connector with a USB cable plugged into the camera and have a picture you take show up instantly on the iPad, kind of like if you used tethering software.

I saw this the other day and was pretty impressed. This guy wirelessly tethers his iPad to his 5DmII to view photos, but he had to follow quite a few steps to achieve it.

"I'm out of the contest..."

I love the intertoobs sososososososos much, thanks again al gore!

Agreed on wanting (a legit) adhoc transfer method, but i can cross that bridge later. For a photog, this may tip the scale from 3G to Wifi/Mifi, since It would bridge that adhoc gap.

lol, I'm half way out the door to best buy to go get this eyefi and try it.

I agree. I really want one! If anything to display my portfolio.

Yes to raws

Check to see if the iPad can display raws, because I doubt it. I use my computer to save my best photos at iPad size (1024x768) and in jpg format. They showcase very well and conserve space. Of course you could shoot jpg or raw + jpg and then use an SD to display the jpg on iPad immediately.

I upload raws from my Nikon D300s just fine, I was surprised to see the iPad was able to read them. I do believe it will not alter the raws files once you decide to import them to you computer. I think once the software grows up it could be a great tool for photographers, but a good file manager is needed it's time consuming to delete many photos..I learn if you drag your finger across a row of photos it will check them easier to be deleted. A delete all would be good, like I say the software needs to grow up.

^^^^^ Okay dude thank you. Thats pretty much what I wanted to know. Okay so it will read them and probably not alter them. Couple that with a little "portfolio" album and I think I will be saving for an iPad. You guys all seem to like them anyways, and I want to use it for bed reading too. ahahha

(Can you see my trying to justify the purchase? LOL)
THANKS for all the input!

This is an inaccurate statement. The iPad can display raw photos at least mine does.

No, it is a correct statement.

When a raw photo is taken, a smaller JPEG 'side car' file is also generated that is connected to the raw image. Actually, this smaller file is typically what you see on the back of the camera is this smaller JPEG file. What Apple is doing is showing this smaller file, and not decoding the larger raw file.

So, my statement is 100% accurate; the iPad is showing a low res JPEG copy of the raw file, not the raw file itself.

I find it lacks any organizational functions.

Since it doesn't support folders, I have trouble sorting photos in any way other than Albums, Events, Faces, or Places.

I also would like an option for Places to offer a line item versus a map view. Both my DSLR and P&S are equipped with GPS, so mapping (geotagging) is automatic for me, but finding things on a map is not the most efficient means of finding photos.

How are others organizing photos on their iPad?

How are others organizing photos on their iPad?

I set up pics in folders on the desktop. All folders in one main folder.

I sync that main folder in iTunes. It keeps the subfolder name on the iPad and the pics remain in their subfolder.

The iPad supports folders (directories), but not nested folders (subdirectories). For example, I had these folders of photos on my WIN7 laptop:

C:\Japan/Kyoto
C:\Japan/Tokyo
C:\Japan/Hiroshima
C:\Motorcycles
C:\Colorado

When I synced my iPad, it created separate albums for motorcycles and Colorado, but it took the folders for Kyoto, Tokyo and Hiroshima and lumped them into one album called Japan. (This is genius?)

What I ended up doing was getting ridding of all my subdirectories:

C:\Kyoto
C:\Tokyo
C:\Hiroshima
C:\Motorcycles
C:\Colorado

That gave me individual directories for each album. Subdirectories may work when syncing the iPad with a Mac though.

Count me as another that uses the iPad for photo/video proofing (yes it imports directly from the contourhd memory card)

I shoot RAW with my d80, pop in the SDHC card and import into iPad (takes a long bloody time to import <8gb NEFs, like go get a drink long time)

Like noted above it doesn't render the NEFs just the side car JPG. As long as you know it's just for proofs it should do fine for viewing purposes.

Besides the slow loading which I can deal with (just plop another SD card into the cam and keep shooting), the other nag I have is the iPad screen is near impossible to see outdoors even with the brightness at 100%. I'm a skydive photographer so my workshop is outdoors by nature (no pun intended), so just something to keep in mind if you find yourself outdoors.
