Sorry, my post wasn't actually aiming at you, my point was to separate developed and western countries from countries with different issues.

I didn't even want to be critical about South America at all - but where public safety is concerned, the region requires extra precaution and should be not treated in the same sense as the OP was going to somewhere like Florida.

Thanks, that is very true... In Sao Paulo I would put my iPad in my pack in the trunk when taking a taxi for example, which i would have never thought about in the other countries I was in...

Learn kung-fu and also download one of the numerous apps that creates weapon sounds (ie: shotgun).

Have been in Greece for 2 weeks now with my iPad (typing on it right now) and have not had any scares or issues. Just be smart about it. :)

I also have not taken it to the beach with me, as nice as reading an iBook there sounds, I don't feel safe knowing a grain of sand can penetrate my Apple case and scratch the screen or back, even with a PS antiglare on.

Again, Greece is not quite the Caribbeans just as Detroit downtown is not like Vancouver.

No worries!

I think perhaps most of people there never hear of iPad or don't know what the iPad can do. Or you can mark it "This is not iPad, don't take it away!" :)

Just a joke! Just take your iPad with you, it is safe! it is so difficult for those man to steal a so huge stuff from your side!

I have taken my iPad on 3 big trips so far. I could not fathom traveling without it at this point. My recent 30 hour trip back to Hawaii from Europe just flew by with a good mixture of movies, games, ambien, and single malt scotch whiskey.

However I learned to be careful the hard way a few years ago in Brazil. I made the mistake of not properly researching my lodging in Brazil, and went to a place that was more of a Hostel then a Hotel. I showed up dressed flashy with a suit case and stuck out like a sore thumb. The place had a really shady bottom of the barrel backpacker vibe. That night when we were going out I knew it wasn't wise to leave my $1500 worth of DSLR, and various other goodies with the girl at the front desk....

You live and you learn. I had travel, and renters insurance which both helped out and turned a $2000 dollar mistake, into an opportunity for a nice new camera. Still to this day I would gladly pay the $2000 to get back all the photos I had stored on the cards in the bag.

Regardless if you are taking your iPad make sure that you are insured! If you need medical treatment then you will be in serious trouble in south America without it.

When you travel you need to make descisions before you depart. Ask yourself these questions

Am I traveling in luxury, or to budget destinations?

You are going to budget destinations. Good choice I have had the best times of my life in budget surroundings. However this means that unless you want to be stressed out (rightfully so) leave everything behind. I mean everything. You traveled to get away from home, why bring it with you.

Will these clothes be appropriate for my surroundings?

If your staying in a underprivileged locale then try your best to assimilate. Leave all your clothes with visible logos, at home. Then study how the locals dress. Try to blend in. Wear what they wear, do what they do. Let the idiot with the polo shirt, waving around his $300 watch and expensive camera get robbed. If you dress down a class or two you will fly under thieves radar. Meanwhile your the one with the iPad in your backpack.

The main thing is just being aware. Dressing down, staying sharp, and ever since Brazil leaving everything but the bare necessities at home has let me avoid any hassles in many countries that are notorious for robbery.

I also helps that I'm 6 foot 2 brown and muscular. Which keeps me out of some trouble, and gets me into other

If something does happen remember that your new iPad will just restore right where the old one left off.

Have a great trip!

No offense taken, hopefully, but ....

I've never really understood the attraction of spending a lot of money to travel to a foreign country, only to relax in a walled-in resort area with armed security, so the tourists can pretend things are much nicer than they really are there?

It just seems like it's usually so people can brag about having gone to one of those countries, without being inconvenienced by the realities of them?

More to the topic at hand: I agree with whoever said the scarcity of the iPad is making it more of a crime target right now. That will fade as a bigger supply of them gets out there.... But currently, even here in the USA, I'm a little cautious about using my iPad in public places. It looks different enough from a typical portable computer or phone that people immediately take notice of it. Putting it in a case that makes it appear to be a "Day Timer" organizer or paper notepad or something is a wise decision -- but the screen is still big and bright enough, people take note as soon as you start using it.

You should be completely safe to use it within the hotel, beach and the resort.

I have visited the carribean twice. Dominican republic. The hotels are all in resort which has armed police on patrol. Its quite safe, but once you go outside... No way! For tourists its quite scary out there unless your with tour operatives on a bus or something.

So basically use ur ipad on the plane, airport and in the hotel, beach and resort. Thats it. However...with the screen on the ipad i imagine it would be hopeless to try use it out in the beach! Lol. Plus it may be to hot for the ipad to operate. Its usually 30-40*C Im not sure 100% but i think the opearting temperature of the ipad is 0-35*C

And i guess its a no brainer but i hope your taking your ipad on the plane as hand luggage! Your ipad will be damaged most likely in ur main baggage :) I was dumb enough to do this with an expensive digital camera on my first holiday. Oops! Lol

Hope you enjoy your travels :)
