The argument here is that the dad says that BB already has a computer that is fine. Also, the second assertion from dad is that BB agreed to save the money instead of spending it on whatever.
Yes, but according to BB, he never agreed that the money he was earning would be saved.

I can understand the point that BB should not get the Mini because his dad believes his current computer is good enough.

I don't agree that his dad is being fair, however. IF, as BB is stipulating, that the money was never intended to be saved, then he should be able to spend it however he sees fit (well, within reason).

Therefore it all boils down to whether or not BB is justified in believing that purchasing the Mini falls in the range of "within reason" or whether his dad is justified in believing that that purchase falls outside of the range of "within reason".

That said, I would agree with what you said, however I would say it like this: I think that in the end BB should not disobey his dad, but because his dad is being unfair (seemingly), BB should still try to change his dad's mind.

Yes, therein lies the rub.

We only have BB's story. We haven't (and probably will never) hear from his dad. I can remember back to when I was 15. In this situation, I may have said that I would save the money and then "forget" about it. I'm not saying that this is the case here. Only that there is a difference of opinion between BB and his dad.

I'm not sure who bought the original PC, but if it is still an OK computer, then why the need for the mini? If the PC is not an OK computer, then it was a bad purchase. This is the catch in BB's argument with his dad. It's going to be hard to justify the purchase here. If BB does end up pulling this one out, then he may have a future as a litigator (as if we need any more of them ... nah, j/k).

Anyways, BB good luck in your endeavors in trying to "Go Mac".

I have a question I was wondering if you guys can help me out.
I have a Mac Mini and I want to install an airport card because I plan on moving my setup to another part of my place and I don't want to run wires.

I aleady have Airport Express for my Powerbook, so I don't need a wireless modem.

Can I install a Airport card on a mini?

I don't think so. I think you need a AE card specifically for the mini, but I could be wrong.

As for the original topic, I have a 1.42ghz mini w/1 gb RAM, AEm and the stock 80gb HDD. It replaced a 1.8ghz iMac G5 w/768mg RAMm which replaced a ~2.4 P4 w/ 512mb RAM, which I build myself with pretty decent specs (fast hdd, 9600pro/128 GPU which was pretty decent at the time).

The iMac was OK, but loud and not all that fast. The mini is virtually silent (backing up a DVD can get loud, between the optical drive and the fan kicking on), is just as responsive as the iMac was, which was pretty similar in terms of how fast it 'felt' to my old PC, and I have been perfectly happy with it for everything from basic web/emai/itunesl/word/excel usage to web/PHP coding and testing, and basic to intermediate graphics editing. Lately I have been using to to hook up to my HDTV via DVI-HDMI and watching movies and TV shows through it. It's great for that, but I am wishing it had just a little more oomph for full HD video playback.

All in all, it's a great machine. I think my wife is looking forward to getting it when the intel ibooks are released and I treat myself to one of those. :)

You can install an Airport Extreme card into the mini, but you'll need to find the wireless connectivity kit for the Mac mini. It'll give you 11g and Bluetooth when you're done. The problem is that it's not that easy to find the kit and when you do get it, you'll have to do some Mac surgery. Not sure what the process entails, but in this case, Google may be your friend.

that makes me really happy to hear. i think you are doing great with the parents. i guess it's never too late to learn how to say no. there are times when it is important to stand one's ground. :)

thanks, lol, i am 20 so he doesnt realy have a choice on what i spend my money on, and now he realises this. and from this we respect each other and it has brought us closer together (everybody: awwww)lol.

i told him the other day im getting a new tv and a printer, he doesnt mind, but as long as everyhting is kept tidy and i let him know he doesn't dont mind.

i help him with the odd thing, and search for some stuff on the internet for him, he has also stopped bad mouthing apple pc's. and like i say we get on well.

if barfbag tried this i dont think he would go far wrong. i got my mini with out him knowing it. set it up at work then brought it home, ive now set up a wireless network with airport express's and he doesnt mind that either. but if didnt take that inital stab and got the mini, i would be with out a apple, and still a moody teenager.

I live in Baltimore, Maryland. When school is not in session, I can *legally* work 8 hours a day. But I found a loophole. I worked 10 hours a day and stored up a lot of over time. All I had to do was fill out an extra time card at the end of the summer with all of my overtime.

Really? Cool. Here, I cannot work overtime... once again, illegal for minors.

Lol, i had the same situation after christmas lastyear. I got an ipod and some money, and after using ipod i wanted to get a mac. I saved up from january to june to get an ibook and wjust when I had enough I got the "why do you need it?" question from my parents. I didint really give them an anwser i just told them that my school uses them(used them, first day of school walked into one of the science rooms to find all the cool imacs replaced by.....DELLS!!!
The first thing I thought of was my science teacher from last year. She had an ibook which she loved and always talked about hating windows, I wish i could see the look on her face when she walked in her room to see all the macs replaced by the dells)
But back to the story I told my parents my school uses them and also about programming on it using xcode. After that my parents were alright with the fact of me wanting a new computer but now I had to get passed the question of "Why a iBook?". I never mentioned the OSX to them because that would probably confuse them even more i just *lied* and told them that it was faster than a 3 ghz P4 and also talked about the velocity engine (i knew that they didint know what 128 bit vector processing was, i just said it to make it sound superior to the P4).
Finally they asked me "why do you need 2 computers?". Because it ultimate multitasking!. But i told them if i got an ibook i would move my pc to the family room.
They finally agreed and bought me it, my first mac. A 1.42 ghz iBook, i love it!
Tips would be try talking about really confusing tech specs, throw in some unix stuff and finally dont give up I remember multiple times when i wanted to get buy a cheap pc notebook.

Good Luck
:D :D

edit...
If all else fails just "accidently" break you pc.
