So far I have used OCLP on a 2011 iMac, 2011 Mini and 2010 MacBook to install Montery. No problems with these. A friend of mine recently tried it with a heavily upgraded 5,1. While he got it to work in the end, it was quite an efford with multiple trial and error steps in between. It makes sense that this is far easier with a closed system like the regular Macs than with a Mac Pro with a 3rd party gpu.

That said, this friend of mine is now happily using his machine with Adobe CS 2023.

Only you can decide if the hassle is worth it for you. If it's only for one app that doesn't require too much resources, OCLP might be a lot easier on one of your "closed" Macs.

The youngest Mac I own is a Late 2009 Mac Mini. That's not my daily driver. My Early 2009 MacPro with a third party GPU is, and that's the one I want to update. So, no 'closed' Mac to be had.

I do have a 2015 MBP running High Sierra, but that isn't mine - it's work issued.

I use OCLP on my 5,1 Mac Pro, it's got a GTX 780 GPU in it. I have Monterey installed, after the OS is patched with OCLP for the graphics, it runs great. Big Sur and back don't need any patching at all with OCLP, and also run great.

Why not try it on a separate partition on the 2009 Mini? Less hassle and you don't have to mess with your main machine. If my 2010 MacBook can run Montery that Mini should work too. How often do you need that specific app?

I was thinking of trying on the Mini, but without a partition. Either the main drive or an SSD through an adapter. With the exception of my MacPro I can afford to screw up any of my Macs (and they all have backups anyway).

The app in question is not necessary. I just wanted to try it, but the system requirements mean Catalina at a minimum. There's no rush to do this so the Mini will probably be the guinea pig.

Mini guinea pig sounds good! :)

OCLP would be my recommendation. It works pretty seamlessly, make a USB and patch it, boot off the drive and install macOS to the drive you want to upgrade, boot off the usb to boot to your SSD, run the patch and you're off to the races. Updates don't usually break things and everything works like it should. Im running Monterey on my Mid-2012 Mac Mini and there are no bugs that I can find.

Work is starting to get a little busy now. Golf courses getting ready to open so this will probably have to wait until this weekend.

Thanks all.

Not to hijack the thread but it's easier to ask here, from what I gather is it impossible to have a partition of a newish macOS (Big Sur or Monterey for example) alongside a version before High Sierra. In that it would be impossible to run Mavericks and Monterey on the same machine, due to APFS. I've considered installing one of these versions on my 2012 iMac, but I cannot get rid of Mavericks or Sierra so easily.

I have Mavericks on HFS+ and Mojave on APFS on the same SSD. Works great, but Mavericks obviously can't see the APFS partition and I can't choose it in Startup Disk.

Interesting, perhaps I will have to try. I remember seeing disaster threads where the OS seized control of all partitions and converted them to APFS, leaving no choice but to wipe the disk to regain the old OSes. That was some time ago though, and who knows what went wrong in their case.

I do remember when I got my 2012 iMac with Mojave on it, I could not make it work to dual boot it with older OS, but once more that was some time ago. Ended up completely formatting.
