Since when aren't the upgrades to newer versions of Mac OS X free anymore?
Apple isn't offering Yosemite on its store --at all-- for some reason. Mountain Lion is the last "purchase-able" upgrade, which is $19.99
{e.g Not Free}. AFAIK upgrades from Snow Leopard were never "free". I also bought Lion for $19.99.

And regarding that: I think you should upgrade to El Capitan because the drivers are far better than in lion for the r9 380. That could be the reason that the OpenGL part is grayed out?

Mavericks and Yosemite were free upgrades, so you can only re-download them if you purchase them (for free) when they were active OS X's. Same will be with El Capitan in few months - if you don't buy it now, you wont be able to download it once 10.12 comes out. Earlier OS's (10.8, 10.7, and so on) were about 20 bucks, so you can still buy them if you want.
