Hi - I just finished putting a 6870 in a 2009 MP and would like to add a +1 to those that say it's easy. No kexts or any other mods - just dropped it in and booted. I don't need the DVD player or boot screen so those aren't issues for me. But performance is miles ahead of where I was with two GT120s this card replaced. Used for Lightroom, Photoshop and VMWare/Fusion.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned is that the OS isn't picking up the exact card ID in any of the places it should. It sees it as a 6xxx. Is this normal? (Pic attached)

The best thing I like about the 6870 is the lack of noise..

Hello,

Anyone here still using 10.6 with their 6870 + mini DisplayPort + HDMI to a TV?

Thanks,

Loa

I've just installed a Msi 6870 in my '06 Mac Pro and it's working great. Steam works out of the box in OS X, didn't need to patch anything! Can't check if dvd player works since i'm using the power cable from the dvd drives to power the 6870.

Anyone who wants me to test something?
The exact card type is: R6870-2PM2D1GD5/OC by the way..

Are both DVI ports working for you? How about the HDMI?

Thanks Cindori!

for lion you only need aty_init (to fix dvd player+steam problems)

I installed the aty_init using your Kext Drop application then restarted and now all of our Steam games and DVD work again. Thank you :D:D:D:D:D:D We're running a 1GB XFX 6870 using 10.8.1.

All we needed was the aty_init, no flashing required. Yippeeee

Oh, don't forget to switch your DVI port, if your screen stays black after start-up. Only one of the DVI ports work, but we have several other ports to choose from on our 6870.

Only Worked for About An Hour

:eek:The aty file only worked for about an hour and then the screen would flash to a solid color with vertical, or horizontal lines. My guess would be that the card was overheating, so there must be something missing in the aty to regulate the dual fans on the graphics card. When we pulled the aty file out of the extensions folder the problem went away.

Not too big of a loss, since the card works fine without any flashing, or extra extensions files. Just have to boot into Boot Camp for Left for Dead, Civ 5, and Team Fortress. After playing for a few minutes I forget all about the vile Windose operating system and its demonic humming in the background.

Thanks anyways Cindori. My guess is that it would be impossible to include every single bios from all the cards out there in the aty. I never made it much beyond basic programming on our ol' Commodore VIC 20, with cassette tape drive, so I'm at a loss for what needs to be modified to get the aty to run the fans properly.
