No actually the new default is better, and I'm disappointed in Apple for making such a poor concession by adding this toggle.

People like you will never try anything new.
I agree.

That Henry Ford quote is so apt here!

“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”

There is an accessibility setting to allow for the behavior you want. Settings > General > Accessibility > Home Button > Rest Finger to Open

I think the phone goes off too early when raised to wake. 4 out of 5 times when I picked up my pine from desk, pocket I was not fast enough to unlock it before it switched off again. Could this "wake" period be prolonged somehow for 2-3 sec?

I believe you can only disable/enable it and that's about it as far as any controls over it.

Can you explain how it's better? I don't see it really.
Didn't say it was better, (although I prefer it), just agreeing that you have to try something new in order to keep moving forwards, otherwise you'll end up stuck in the past.

The new way is better if you have a 7 where the button isn't a real button. If you have the 6S and earlier, enabling touch to unlock makes more sense so you don't need to press down on a physical button.
