I think it's more expensive to have Apple upgrade the RAM for you because you're paying for someone to put that RAM in the computer, as well as, taking the other RAM sticks out. And, considering that it's a Mac, it isn't as easy of a procedure.

Do you believe it's far more plausible that the machines are originally assembled in the various configurations? Your scenario might be true in the Apple Store, but certainly not on the original order.

Are RAM upgrades in-store the same price as the online store upgrade price?

It's gonna be more if you go to the store I think to upgrade the RAM since they will tack in labor cost. And, they might have to order in the RAM, in which case, your Mac will sit in the store while that is being ordered.

So, price would be labor + RAM upgrade.

I am not sure if Apple will install third-party RAM for you though, if you have bought third-party RAM separately... went to the Apple store with your Mac and say, "Can you install this for me?"

In that scenario, you are really better off DIY since 1) cheaper; 2) will learn more about your Mac; 3) It's not that hard to do; 4) you have this forum for help

As for machine assemblage... look at my prior post #22...
