Well hell, I came across this thread and it seems Apple has not fixed the problem. I have a two-weeks old 2.6 GHz i7 Mac Mini (Macmini6,2) with factory 8MB RAM running Mavericks 10.9.4, and I've experienced a few-seconds-long blackout a few times now with a new ViewSonic VX2370SMH. I think it happens during youtube flash videos, but I can't say I'm 100% on the first one. This really sucks. I'm debating returning it (a PITA) but then if it's a hardware issue, what have I accomplished. I really like the machine :-/ Advice other than PRAM, Apple ticket, and return/replace? Thank you.

May be another issue you're seeing. Apple fixed this with a firmware patch more than 1.5 years ago. I'd get in contact with Apple support.

OK, thank you. Note that these two d.a.c threads indicate the problem is still around:

Interesting. As you can see, most people had their issue resolved long long ago with the firmware fix.

The best course of action is always contacting Apple directly. They can't fix a problem if they don't know about it and forums like this make issues appear much wider spread than they really are (take a look at the iPhone bending issue which turned out to be only about 9 people in total).

I had this problem today after a power outage, with a 2012 mac mini, and a philips monitor on HDMI. This forum gave me a fright, but Resetting the SMC fixed it for me.

"To reset the SMC on Intel-based Mac Pro, iMac, and Mac mini computers, as well as Xserve:
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer."

2014 Mini has this problem since 10.10.3 update

My mini has been doing this since the 10.10.3 OS-X update, very random and very annoying. I did post on the Apple Support site and they sent this link:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201177

I've done the SMC reset and checked all the connections. Going to try the PRAM reset this evening.

Tried resetting everything and done fresh install on new SSD but still not fixed :(

PRAM reset didn't work for me either. I'll have to call Apple when I have the time. Doesn't affect data and not that frequent, but it's a PITA.

If you get any useful help from Apple please let me know :)

Since 10.10.3 I've been seeing little artifacts on my 2nd monitor and occasionally on my main monitor. Usually some red appearing for a few seconds and flashing.

I am seeing occasional flashing also on my main display.

But I am mostly annoyed by my secondary display (Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort connection) just randomly going black and the monitor still believes it is getting a signal from the computer.

I have tried the SMC reset and PRAM reset. Neither helps.

My mini is a late 2012 model with Yosemite 10.10.3. I have identical HP ZR2440w monitors.

Oh, and my primary display is connected via HDMI.

This problem has the following caracteristics: 1) It happens with Macbook Pro, 2) It happens also with Mac Mini (I'm mad about mine!), 3) Apple does not do anything to solve it, 3) Never happens with Windows machines (although it happens with my Mac mini when running Windows with Bootcamp.

The new 10.10.4 update mentions improvements to monitors. Let's hope it fixes this.
