1. iPhone SE1 (perfect size, premium in the small body of the 5S)
2. iPhone 4 (Retina display, and jailbreaking gave me more features)
3. iPhone SE3 (TouchID, fast A15 and 5G. Too big and no headphone jack!)
4. iPhone 13 Mini (Too big, no headphone jack, no TouchID, and screen causes me PWM)
I can't cope with the lack of headphone jack. Still using my SE 1, it's the best iPhone because it's a classic form factor, but has enough processing power and modern iOS for a usable experience today.

1) iPhone 11 Pro - My favorite design. Great feel, weight, size, cameras, battery, everything. Wish they still made this size. The included software-based portrait mode in practice is nearly always better than the hardware-based one that was also on previous models, but it's nice that they gave us the choice between the two. I must admit I did miss the loss of 3D touch but was willing to accept it if that meant better battery life.

2) iPhone 7+ - May just be because I was coming from a disappointing iPhone 6 to this, but I really loved this phone. Great weight distribution, speedy, and good battery life. Blazing fast fingerprint reader.

3) iPhone XS - A solid phone that gave me more hope for Face ID after the previous X model failed to impress with how slow it was. Battery life was average at best until dark mode was introduced.

4) iPhone 5 - A solid performer and great for its time.

5) iPhone 8+ - The portrait lighting options that were first released with this model were laughably bad, even on the pictures used in the store's demo units. Weight distribution was quite uncomfortable in comparison to the 7+, and seemed to have worse battery life.

6) iPhone SE (2nd Gen) - I wanted to love this because the fingerprint reader was nice in an era of facemasks but the battery was just so terrible. The RAM also gave me issues, with apps often reloading even if I was only out of them briefly.

7) iPhone 13 Pro - The camera was a complete letdown and pictures/video always looked muddy. Zoom was awful. Extremely top-heavy. The square edges look good but in actual use were quite uncomfortable.

8) iPhone 6 - Had more hardware issues with this than any other iPhone. Gen 1 fingerprint reader was also slooooow.
iPhone 7+ was also the first iPhone with dual cameras.

1. 7 Plus
2. SE
3. 5s
4. 4s
5. iPhone 3G
6. iPhone

7 plus has been kept the longest so has the love.
5s was almost perfect coupled with an iPad.
4s blew me away at the time and I have fond memories of queuing on launch day.
3G really opened my eyes to smartphones after having the first iPhone and all the previous Nokia's + Motorola's.
Still using a 7+. Starting to feel slow and battery does not last. But. . .
I'm now feeling the need to upgrade. Trying to decide 14Pro or ProMax. (but they are both so much heavier and thicker)

I thought this might be fun. Feel free to throw in your other devices you have owned too. My first smartphone was in 2012 starting with the iPhone 5. I understand that newer devices are obviously higher-spec, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t have a better overall experience with older models.

1.) iPhone XR (Bonafide #1 and longest kept device).
2.) iPhone SE (2022)
3.) iPhone 5 (Extra points for nostalgia).
4.) Samsung Galaxy S8+
5.) iPhone 5C (Stupid purchase only because I had the 5 before it).
6.) Samsung Galaxy S7 (Absolute junk. Worst device I have owned by a country mil
I think pretty much the phones have got better as time passed. Probably the only out of order phone was the X over the 11. I like the size better for the X.

No it wasn’t. It was by far the least significant update up to that point back inn 2015, and remains top 2-3 most insignificant updates of all time in the history of iPhone
They did at least address the bending if I recall.

I slightly bent my 6 (non-S) pretty easily - not even sitting on it, just carrying around in jeans pocket. My next phone was a 7 which while looking similar was much, much more durable.

The 6 bending was more prevalent on the 6 plus if I recall, but even the 6 wasn't great for that.

1. iPhone 4 - loved the metal frame, the size, the glass back. There was nothing like it at the time, that's why No. 1
2. iPhone 13 Pro - my first FaceID phone. Great videos, the most capable phone I've had. But there's plenty of alternatives, it's just iPhone 12 upgrade and it makes inconsistent photos.
3. iPhone 3GS - changed the game, loved browsing app store and exploring new apps
4. iPhone 8 - my transition from Android back to iOS phone, loved how lightweight it was, home button nostalgia, made great photos, felt very premium
5. iPhone SE (the OG). I have it as backup phone for basic things. Reminds me of iPhone 4, I'll always keep it.

fun thread!

iPhone original - hacked on T-Mobile and used all the jailbreak resources prior to the actual App Store.
It was a fantastic six month period figuring out what this thing could do.

iPhone 4 - the screen, awesome industrial look and build quality made this one shine! Especially after the plastic iPhones 3G and 3GS.

iPhone 5 - Touch ID.

iPhone 6 - bigger screen

iPhone X - OLED and Face ID

Whatev after that haha

1. iPhone 3G my first time using a iPhone
2. iPhone 4 Loved the size, build & Glass Back
3. iPhone X on par with IPhone 4 missed the removal of the rear glass case for the slimmer aluminium back on the iPhone 5
4. iPhone 12 Pro Max current phone welcomed the larger screen.
5. iPhone 5 never took to the form factor
6. iPhone 6 on par with 5 never liked the form factor or the aluminium back

1. iPhone 14 Pro Max
(128GB; T-Mobile; Deep Purple)

—— Chalk it up to recency bias, but this phone has been a delight since I got it a few days back. Love the Dynamic Island, the new cameras, and the screen size and battery life. My first try of a phone bigger than the “standard” size (Pro, formerly just the flagship), and I have to say it’s been all good, and no bad/annoying so far. I was pretty neutral on the AOD before it was announced (nice to have, but I’m fine without it), but they have done it in such an elegant way that I can’t help but like it.

2. iPhone 12 Pro
(128GB; T-Mobile; Pacific Blue)

—— I love this iPhone. It was the perfect confluence of the iPhone 5s and iPhone X design languages. The Pacific Blue was and is still my favorite color ever on an iPhone. The Ceramic Shield was a nice addition to the build quality of the phone.

3. iPhone 13 mini
(128GB; T-Mobile; Blue)

—— The size alone is what made this a fan favorite for me. If Apple could develop an iPhone Pro mini, with respectable battery life, I’d be sold. Owning the mini iPhone, for what would be the last year of it being a flagship, was fun. Truly a beautiful, near perfect distillation of what iPhone is in essence.

4. iPhone X
(64GB; T-Mobile; Silver)

—— The most mind-blowing redesign of iPhone, since the original. I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited to preorder anything. T-Mobile charged me a pretty penny to upgrade, but you better believe I forked over the cash and my iPhone 7 so I could step into the future of iPhone. Crazy to think that was 5 years ago now… The Silver color option is still one of my favorite iPhone designs ever. So clean and minimalist.

5. iPhone 5s
(16GB; T-Mobile; Gold)

—— This was the first iPhone I bought by myself. I was 16, and had been saving up since I got my first job at a local supermarket earlier that year (the job was dreadful, but what first job isn’t, eh?) to get the 5s when it was announced. The second I saw the Gold color when announced, I knew I wouldn’t settle for anything less. Apparently neither would a lot of other people, seeing as I had to wait until December 2013 to get mine. This was the first year on T-Mobile, after I moved to to my own cellular plan. Glad to say their service has improved since haha. This design was my favorite for years, and it really looked like a jewel.

6. iPhone 4
(8GB; AT&T; Black)

—— Going from the 3G to the 4 really felt like a step into the future. This was a time when iPhone (and really all smartphones) felt like each year was a massive leap forward. FaceTime was like a vision of the future. The design was and still is world class. Artful and precise.

7. iPhone
(8GB; AT&T)

—— I mean, come on, it’s the original. Apple really did reinvent the phone in 2007. I remember waiting in line with my mother to buy this. It was the first time I ever went to an Apple Store. What an amazing first time. I remember turning it on for the first time and getting everything set up. Felt like the king of the world lol. I was 10, and I remember being the only person with an iPhone for the better part of that first year. Looking back, that original design is so unique and perfect. You can tell how much love and care went into the design process.

8. iPhone 7
(128GB; T-Mobile; Jet Black)

—— This year was almost the first year I went for a “Plus” sized phone. Was between Jet Black 7 and Matte Black 7 Plus, since it would have been the same out of pocket cost. Decided the color was more important than a dual camera. Design was nice, and was the best take on the 6-8/SE design language.

9. iPhone 11 Pro
(64GB; T-Mobile; Midnight Green)

—— I was just happy getting away from the gold iPhone Xs (read why below lol). The evolved design was appreciated, with the matte glass and triple camera setup. Nice increase in battery life too. Midnight Green was nice at the time but looks so tame compared to the colors we’ve gotten since.

10. iPhone 4S
(16GB; Verizon; Black)

—— Siri! What a promising feature. Still a defender and user of Siri to this day, but that introduction really made me a believer in the idea of AI and Machine Learning, even if the Siri of 2011 was won’t using either. Really felt like a big step forward. Shout out to the last 3.5 inch iPhone.

11. iPhone 6s
(16GB; T-Mobile; Rose Gold)

—— Rose Gold was so hyped, and I was definitely on the hype train for that color. Looking back, it was nice, if not a bit overly vivid. 6s was what the 6 should have been all along. RIP 3D Touch, what an underutilized feature. I remember so many people saying it was a boring “S” year, but looking back, and seeing how beloved the 6s became, I’d say it got the last laugh.

12. iPhone 6
(16GB; T-Mobile; Gold)

—— I was one of those people who never had an issue with the small size of iPhone (¡Viva la mini form factor!), so the “Bigger than Big” move was welcomed, but not more than somewhat tepidly by me. Apple Pay was the big motivator for me to upgrade, and it was so cool to use (in the places it was actually accepted in 2014-15), now it just feels like a given in societal commerce.

13. iPhone 3G
(8GB; AT&T; Black)

—— The first upgrade! Felt big back then, but looking back, it was a step down in design and feel. Best looking phone of 2008-09 for sure, but doesn’t exactly look stunning compared to what came before (iPhone) or after (iPhone 4).

14. iPhone 4
(16GB; Verizon; White)

—— I remember it being such a big deal to me to get the white iPhone 4. We literally broke the contract with AT&T to go to Verizon so I could get literally the same phone, but in white. Absolutely crazy of me looking back, but I’ll put it on me being an impulsive 13 year old haha.

15. iPhone Xs
(64GB; T-Mobile; Gold)

—— Let me preface this with the fact that I don’t think this was a “bad” phone. I don’t think there has ever been a bad iPhone to be honest. It was an updated and (very slightly) improved iPhone X, and really was the cliché “S” year iPhone. Even then I was on the fence about bothering to upgrade, but since the cost was reasonable (Just had to pay the taxes with a trade in with T-Mobile), I decided to go for it. Also briefly considered the Xs Max, but again punted on it because it would have been an additional $100, and as a college student, that was money I really couldn’t spare. I was solidly _whelmed_ by this phone from the get go. But the color? I was mildly excited for a gold phone, since I hadn’t had gold since the iPhone 6, but man did I grow to hate that version of gold. It was headache inducing because of the iridescent-esque sheen Apple applied to the glass or something. I wound up just putting a simple black case on it after a few months.

1. 4s -> piece of art
2. 6s -> built like a tank
3. 11 -> so so, quite good but not extraordinary
4. SE2 -> half here and half there
5. 3GS -> worst one, iPod style phone, design and tech is still immature

My 14 Pro is too new to rank yet so I'll exclude it.

iPhone 8 Plus - Durable, reliable, good cameras, good battery, the software was stable then...basically had no complaints. Loved the Product Red color.

iPhone 12 - Handled everything I threw at it, and did it in a nice light package. After years of increasingly heavy phones I really enjoyed going back to this lighter one. But I missed the telephoto lens the whole time I used it, which is why I didn't keep it a full two years.

iPhone 7 Plus - It was fine. Was a wonderful upgrade over my ailing iPhone 6, the Jet Black was a gorgeous finish, if not the most durable, etc. Just not especially remarkable either, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

iPhone 4 - Design wise it's still a winner, but I only had it the last year it was viable (2013-2014) so my sole experience was under iOS 7. Was it better than the Android/Palm stuff I'd been using? Absolutely. But was it slow and tiny by that point? Yep.

iPhone 6 - Boy, was this thing a dud. Bought a 64GB unit on launch day, the first time I'd done that for any device. The first week or two felt great. Then all the problems with iOS 8 became apparent, and continued until 8.4 when it became 'less bad'. Had to have the battery replaced at around the 14 month mark, as it dropped below 80% in a stunning example of how crap this thing was. The later time under iOS 9 and 10 was more tolerable, but my early model had the crappy flash that Apple swept under the rug, so it was always shaky stability wise. Usually had to do a reboot at least weekly. When I was finally able to get a 7+, I did and never looked back.

I've had some others over the years for work, or ones I've picked up after the fact for collecting, but since none of them were my primary device I'll leave them off the list.

Curious, why did you find this phone junk? I had one and never had an issue with it. Only reason I got rid of it was because I got a great trade in on a Galaxy S10 which I am typing this on.

Sorry for the late reply. At just over 1 year of ownership, the phone was toast. You could be using the phone at 86% battery life, then, boom… phone shuts off, reboots… battery life now 4%. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before. It was my first Android phone, and I wasn’t very crazy about it outside of that either. Didn’t want to deal with it and traded it in. Gave Android one more shot with a Galaxy S8+ and had better results.

I'm not sure about every model because the one you currently have is always going to be the best one (otherwise you'd never upgrade)

My favourite model however will always be the iPhone 1. These days phones are largely all identical but back then there was nothing else like it so you really felt like the member of some exclusive club. I actually got mine for £100 off a colleague who had recently upgraded to the 3G model so it was barely a year old. Getting the App Store update and buying Super Monkey Ball felt like the future. I used it for everything, such as emailing myself whiteboard photos for the following lesson (I was a high school teacher at the time) or having a quick game over lunchtime.

An honourable mention must go to the iPhone 12. For me the perfect phone with meaningful updates over the 11 but since not superseded by the 13 or 14.

Neither are my favourite phone of all time though. That crown has to go to either the Palm Pre, which felt so much like the future iOS and Android still haven't picked its corpse completely clean or the Lumia 620 with all the different back covers which had proper manual camera modes (are you paying attention, Apple's Pro dev team?) and made Windows Phone 8 sing.

I’ve owned only three Eye Phones, but favorites in order:
  1. 8 Plus
  2. 13 (current fone)
  3. SE1
All three were phenomenal, so the ranking is by appearance. 😊

For me, the absolute best phone in terms of performance, battery, and how it felt in my hand was my 11 Pro Max. I loved the rounded edges, it was so comfortable to hold. All other iPhone models are ranked somewhere down beneath that one (and I've had every one, except for one of two of the "S" models, since the original in 2007.

I came from android pretty late in the game so haven’t had that many but here is my ranking:

1. 14 pro max
2. 13 mini
3. 13 pro
4. 12 mini

1) 11 - current phone, seriously all I need, will just get the battery replaced when it's time to
2) 6s - served me well for a long time, still keeping it as backup
3) 4 - my first personal iPhone, loved it, still have it somewhere, on good ol' iOS 6
