So are coreplayer and VLC multitreaded then? If so, are they making use of all four of your cores?

Yes, they both use all 4 cores. Adjusting the settings in VLC even allows playback of 4K files but that's on a 1920 X 1200 screen.

My G5 Quad plays a 1080P 60FPS h264 .mkv file using around 30-35% on each core in VLC and slightly less with Coreplayer.

out of curiosity in whats its CPU usage in Unix terms?

ie in system profiler, for its process what does it report for CPU usage? 100% 200%?

I don't know what you mean, CPU usage in System Profiler? Either way, that's 3 years ago - no longer have the Quad.

whoops brain fart on my part I meant activity monitor, see the individual process list and how each process has a CPU usage percentage?

Right...like I say, 3 years ago but I'd have been monitoring with Menu Meters which display a percentage for each core - so it would have been 35% on each.
