who the hell rents/buys and watches DVD's anymore??

Divx, h264 ect... Optical media ! No MORE !

Probably those who do not have the fast connection to the internet and who think that watchinga film in their living room with good speakers, big screen and soft sofa is better than watching a poor quality movie from the internet on their computer monitor with (usually poor speakers).

After a bit of time, I very much still am in awe and enjoyment of the MB. The MagSafe at first I thought was gimmicky, but,,, it has saved the MB from tumbling on 2-3 occasions. The main biggest negative, as stated before, with this laptop is the durn sharp front edge - why not even a bit of rounding to that molded corner makes me a  fella. Would be nice to have backlit keyboard, at least as an option on the MB. Oh, as to the off topic issue of renting DVD's - on occasion, we do, but usually get 'em for free at the library. ;)

I don't have a MacBook, but I do have a MacBook Pro and I can easily say that it is by far the best computer that I've ever had. I have had some trouble with it but really nothing major, it does exactly what I need it to and the only thing that bugs me is my internet speed (1.5mbps down DSL) which is soon going to be rectified when I get FIOS soon. I don't see why you don't realize that there are 3rd party apps for a reason, don't like iPhoto? Then use Photoshop, can't afford Photoshop then use the GIMP, etc. etc. I have watched maybe one DVD on my MBP total and maybe two on my iBook G4 before that and I didn't have a problem with Apple's DVD player and if I did, I probably would've used VLC or another program like that.

Do you really need more than a .3 MP webcam in the MacBook? It's not meant to be a digital camera, it's just for fun and the MacBook Pro's is for some video conferencing. You said yourself you have a digital camera, so use it. I personally just use the iSight to take a picture here and there, but never as a full fledged digital camera.

About you saying there should be a digital card reader in the laptop, that is a terrible idea, I can go get an external one for under $10 and take it out when I don't need it. I personally would never use it at all. And finally on the USB port issue, my MacBook Pro also has 2 USB ports and I have found that I once used my external 4 port USB hub once and that was just because I was playing a game on my MBP and my sister wanted to play when my iPod was charging so I plugged in the second controller. Just buy a 4 port hub if you are really going to be using that many USB ports at a time.

And just so you know, I pick my MacBook Pro over my sister's HP any day ;).

I haven't read through the whole forum, just the first couple posts. I'm a switcher, never used a mac before this macbook. Got it the first day C2D came out.

So far my experience has been far superior than anything else I've used, including both Win and Lin. I've almost adopted the Apple add telling everybody "on the mac, it just works". I still have a PC, my gf has a PC, at work PCs, and I hate using them now. Things are much simpler on the MAC - so I say it's far superior. No bugs for me so far, no crashes (at least nothing serious, some prog closing and restarting). I'm happy...

Also, yes, it's sometimes hard as a switcher, things aren't where I expect them to be - one thing though - CLICK ON THE HELP BUTTON UP THERE AND SEARCH THE PROGRAM HELP

I did not like the DVD player either, read part of the help stuff, now I think of it as the greatest DVD player I used.

Give it time, you'll really love it... And things just work - went to coffee shop, spent 2 hours trying to get a friend's HP to work with the wireless there - my macbook, opened from sleep, just works... Need motorola RAZR v3m to work with iSync, google that, somebody made a small file, dropped that into library, it worked... The same phone on windows - I had to install software, then look for drivers, then look for other stuff... way too much of a headache, at the end to only find that hey, this is way too much trouble...

I still keep my option of having a Window backup, Parallels are great, but having a second PC is even better.

2 USB ports - get a HUB... problem solved...

Basically, you get it - I became a Mac Addict, please help... ;)

The future of MacBook

Well simply because, the minimalism of a Mac is what actually makes it great in the first place, not because it's got a ton of crap sticking out of it or weighs 20 pounds or is 4 inches thick like any other "super" HP laptop.

I would take this point further by suggesting that Apple makes an even simpler MacBook. I own a black MacBook, and reflecting on what I do with this computer: I would say that I only use about 10% of what this computer has to offer. In all I use about 5 applications about 99% of the time on this computer (iTunes, Safari, iPhoto, Calculator and Photobooth) and of course Microsoft Office. I think I represent a typical user, perhaps as much as 95% of us. Having said this, what is the point of having an ethernet port? Firewire port? the port next to the audio port? DVD/CD player? 2 USB ports (one is enough)?

I won't buy a laptop any time soon, perhaps 4 years from now. By then I will expect Apple to simplify the MacBook even more. What about a MacBook without all the holes on the left side except for the power and a USB port. A MacBook without a hard drive, running exclusively on flash memory. Imagine buying a MacBook without a bootup CD/DVD? Oh, wait! Apple is already selling a line of products that doesn't come with an install CD! Can you guess? A MacBook with one full day of work on battery power alone (8 hours of actual use)?

I don't think the iPhone can ever replace the MacBook. I still want to compose a lengthy email, read the news and or manuscript, and shop on a large screen.
