Hey,

Is the RC2 build of Big Sur released yesterday going to be the same as the final build on Thursday? Looking to fresh install and reformat. Is it ok to go ahead with this one or should I wait till Thursday?

Thanks :)

Is it possible to check the build number from the installer?

Hey,

Is the RC2 build of Big Sur released yesterday going to be the same as the final build on Thursday?

There could be an RC3 before then. Even if not, the public release could still have a different build to the last RC.

I even remember a few years ago they released 2 GM's in less than 24 hours apart. Many developers missed the first of those 2. You really have to be on the ball once GM's/RC's start coming out. They can come out very quickly - somewhat more so than other earlier betas.

I'm checking the developer portal at least 3 times a day now. I usually look at it about once a week!

So would be a good idea to wait till Thursday? Thanks.
There is another way, but it has to do with a temporary folder in your /Library/Updates AS YOU ARE DOWNLOADING IT.
I put that in bold because after it has downloaded that folder will disappear.

The folder is given a number closely associated with the build number. It is called a "product ID".

Product ID 001-77425 is build 20B28 of Big Sur.

So if the folder has that name then you have that build.

Here is what happens to my /Library/Updates before and after I start to download the full installer of RC2 of Big Sur:

Before:

After

Screen Shot 2020-11-11 at 8.46.21 pm.png

As you can see the product id is exactly 001-77425 - hence what is downloading is exactly Big Sur RC2 build 20B28.

To check associations of product id's and build numbers you can use an MDS beta:

I have no idea how I got the 20B26 build but that's defiantly what is coming down from the update public beta route at the moment.

Ahh! I have worked it out.

I solved the mystery that you presented me with.

You DON'T have 20B26. You have 20B28 just like the rest of us.

SDKBuild means that the build of the computer that created your installer was 20B26. It is not the build of your installer - or the build of your computer.

Another way to check this (i.e., the build of the computer that created the installer for big sur rc2) is:

1. right click the installer

2. Click Show Package Contents

3. Open Contents

4. Open Info.plist

5. Scroll down and you see this:

.
.
.
<string>macosx</string>
<key>DTPlatformVersion</key>
<string>11.0.1</string>
<key>DTSDKBuild</key>
<string>20B26</string>
<key>DTSDKName</key>
<string>macosx11.0internal</string>
.
.
.

By the way, macosx11.0internal means 20B26 has never been released - to anyone - except apple engineers.

Thanks for the mate. So when I install this I should see the correct build number in the about window?

When trying to download again I got 001-51046 in the Updates folder? @tywebb13
001-51046 is build 20A5384c which is beta 9.

Confusingly public beta testers still also have access to beta 9.

And before you tell me you have 20A5384b not 20A5384c, I'll nip it in the bud right now and say that 20A5384b was the build of the computer that created 20A5384c.

Haha thanks mate - you're losing me though now. So this version I have now is the latest and final build or not?

The about window shows the build of your computer, but I would hesitate on what downloaded for product id 001-51046. That's beta 9, not RC2.

I checked the MDS for public beta build too:

It seems you have 2 builds.

Product ID 001-51046 is beta 9 which is not RC2.

The build 20B26 which you thought you had was used by apple engineers to create build 20B28 which you probably have - and that is RC2.

well, see the Product ID 001-51046 is what download the version 20B26 info.plist that I showed you. Seems confusing?

I actually have the full installer for product id 001-51046 (i.e., beta 9, i.e., build 20A5384c)

The Info.plist says this:

.
.
.
<key>DTPlatformVersion</key>
<string>11.0</string>
<key>DTSDKBuild</key>
<string>20A5384b</string>
<key>DTSDKName</key>
<string>macosx11.0internal</string>
.
.
.
which is not what you showed me.

You showed me the Info.plist for RC2!

Like I said before, I think somehow you got 2 builds and are confusing the two (.... remember that public beta testers still have access to beta 9 - AND RC2).
