Lack of inventory.
42mm Space Gray Sport shipping estimates slipped within 90 seconds of SOS. That's not demand. That's either A.) poor planning or B.) manufacturing problems.

Not to mention more luke warm reviews than I've ever seen for an Apple product.

This was in response to:

"What evidence do you have that they are struggling?"

so when was the last time apple launched a product that didn't have supply issues?
One model out of many slipped to shipping 2-4 weeks after launch day. It sounds more like you didn't get your order in quick enough and are a sour:apple:.

http://appleinsider.com/articles/15...with-software-update-ahead-of-april-24-launch

If they want to load the fixed software on it before it ships, that will delay shipping, and I can easily see Apple not telling us the release date is being delayed. That would screw up a perfect launch.

I bought the Watch at 2:03 on my iPhone in the app, right when the store opened for me, and I'll get it a month late? Doesn't sound right.

I think they are reloading software. These Watches are supposed to be in boxes, how can they give them a software update before shipping? By delaying them.

Even if you are right, surely you are getting a better product.

It's true. I am sour. But that doesn't mean I'm wrong. I know about 15 people who were up and ordering the Watch the moment the store went live (iOS app). Most of those individuals pressed the BUY button within 90 seconds. Only one has a delivery estimate of April 24. I went immediately for Black SS and June was the shipping estimate (within 30 seconds of launch).

I'll say it again: that's a sign of a problem. Be it poor demand planning, manufacturing issues, etc. etc.

In a way, however, this "sour" feeing is giving way to relief. I'm sure/hopeful Apple will get it together and the Watch will be a solid product. But I'm happy to avoid the beta testing phase.

And I've gone from buyer to non-buyer because the absence of <insert new Apple product> inventory (coupled with less than stellar reviews) indicates to me that this product isn't ready for prime time.

Said someone at every product launch since 2001.

The original iPad is the only device I can think of that wasn't sold out very quickly. Oh, that and the Apple TV, wasn't a line to get the original one of those.

The 42mm space gray sport was 4x more popular than other model according to the poll on this forum, so no surprise that it was the first to sell out.

i ordered the Black SS Watch and got a delivery date of May 12-26. ordered it at 4min past the hour of preorders

Oh, C'mon.. You're too cruel. Let the guy have some fun. Let him lie a little bit, exaggerate some more. I couldn't get enough of this "Apple is doomed" from all these experts even though I have read about it for a thousand times already.

$74.6 billion revenue, $18 billion profit in previous quarter.

Can we PLEASE stop with these ridiculous Apple 'health' threads now?

As for the current launches, both are entirely new designs on entirely new product lines with new machining, technical challenges and logistical issues to contend with not to mention no guide to predict demand. Add to that the likelihood that Apple will face considerably higher demand for its products than any of its competitors in the same situation. Of course they're going to have trouble meeting demand.

Frankly most of these 'fears for Apple' come across far more as 'I can't get what I want NOW so Apple's screwed' whining.

I bought Tesla at $34. Sold at $225.

And I bought a turbo diesel with my "winnings." :)

Not bad at all ;)

How many countries was this released in on the same day? Until yesterday Apple had guesses of which models would be popular but the data gathered in the first minutes let them see the true demand for each model. This data would also be interesting based on the country as styles differ.

I would expect there are very important meetings today that will use that data to decide how to shift production. My biggest surprise was the sports bands seemed to not be ready to buy separately on day 1. Possibly that was only because they are using them first for mass productions of the Sports Models.

My SS watch has an estimate of 4/24, it sounds like plenty on here also got a shipping estimate in the first wave.

Its a sign of limited supply for a brand new product that people have been hearing murmurs about for a few years now.

There are 8 different choices between the sport and watch lines alone. How many watches do you expect them to ship on launch weekend? 1.5 million?
thats less than 200,000 of each variant available to order.

I recognize that we're all strangers with the Internet shielding us from authentic interaction, but let's try to refrain from accusing others of lies and exaggeration.

I'm certainly disappointed to hear that someone else snagged a Black SS at 3:04am. But keep in mind that the store wasn't live at 3:00am on the nose. So 3:04am may have been within the first 30 seconds. I saw nothing but June from the get go.

And when I say "get go" I mean: I began opening/closing/refreshing the Apple Store app, store.apple.com in Safari and store.apple.com in Chrome at 2:58am. I opened/closed/refreshed repeatedly - every five to ten seconds - until the iOS app let me in (at which point I gave up on the browsers). And June was the estimated shipping date immediately.

Apple has never been able to balance supply and demand. Problem for them as far back as the late 80s/early 90s. Especially now given the huge quantities of toys they sell.

I stand before you a humbled man...

I just returned from my local Apple Store. I was in the area, noticed a lack of mayhem inside, and decided to check out the ol' Watch. I walked right in and was immediately offered the opportunity to try one on (which surprised me). Sure! Why not?

So I was asked which two models I'd like to try. I requested the 42mm Sport and 42mm Stainless Steel with link bracelet (Space Black was not available to try on). Let me just say this: The SS Watch is one of the most impressively precise pieces of tech I've seen in a long time. It's not a gadget. It's a watch. A truly beautiful item. The Sport model was decidedly more "gadget-like" with materials and finish that (predictably) weren't as premium. But, DAMN that SS Watch was a beauty. My impression: The Sport model is a smart watch. The SS is a watch.

So...I'm back in the prospective buyer column. And while I'm a bit embarrassed to reply with such a 180-degree shift in attitude, I stand by my original position: Apple needs to figure $%&# out (planning, supply chain, manufacturing, whatever).

Aside: Contrary to what I've been reading, the new Retina MacBook was available in store. And it was stunning. A beautiful machine (even if it is a tablet with a keyboard attached).
