There is definitely something with this power situation. If the iphone is plugged in to power it behaves fine. Actually receives calls, texts and wakes instantly when i press home button. Once its on battery power the trouble begins. Was the same for the other 2 as well.

Also just to be perfectly clear. I HAVE tried different install files from different computers for version 3.0 AND 3.0.1. There was NO difference in results. I had several days of good operation, then will no changes to phone at all got 5 restore messages yesterday. Have been able to shut phone off and turn back on to restore service. Also once yesterday, no restore message but no service to phone, shut off and on again and had 5 bars.

It sounds like something is harming the battery on your iPhones. Perhaps improper voltage or amperage from a non-standard charger or bad USB port?

This happens occasionally on AT&T (with all brands of phones). If you get no signal in an area you know has service, restarting your phone usually fixes it.

Use a different computer.

Use a different charger.

May be too late if the new phone has again been damaged so get a 4th replacement.

If you use a laptop take your laptop and phone to the genius and have them work through it
