I think a lot depends on how fast the mini can sync with your display. Mine takes a few seconds just to wake the display after a screen time out
I don't think that's the issue. We've shown via clear timings that it's around 20 seconds or so, give or take, and a little less if you don't use FileVault and don't have a login prompt to log in.

Can you be more specific? What mini and display have you? What exact process were you doing? Cold (off) mini with a single Apple Studio Display, then boot up to login takes how much time?

I just have an old LG 1080p monitor via HDMI. M1 16/512

In the interest of science, I turned on auto login and shut down. Cold boot to desktop and finder takes 20secs, without reopening windows. I do have a few auto start services like keyboard maestro in the menu bar i didn't bother to turn off.

My decrepit old PC with an AMD phenom processor takes around 30 secs to boot to desktop. My Samsung S10+ phone takes about 30secs. My fire TV stick takes about 30 secs. I was going to post a thread about how the 20-30 sec boot time is like a universal constant lol. I'm amazed by these reports of 2 sec boot.

Let me guess - no login prompt (ie auto login) and no FileVault, yes?
That's the speed to the login. Instant password prompt. My old iMac required probably five to ten seconds.

And the M2 Pro takes about 20 seconds in the informal poll, so far. Please describe in precise detail exactly what takes “half a second” because clearly the MacOS boot process takes far longer than that.

This ONLY just beats my Atari ST (1986) with a 3 second startup time.....:p
The boot up speed was something that surprised me when I pulled my 1040ST out of the closet a couple of years ago. I had forgotten that they were basically ready to go a few seconds after you flipped the power switch.

Outside of industrial FX in Blender, lots of Final Cut Pro renders for programs from one to two hours of 100% composite layering (meaning, every frame has been altered from start to finish), lots of Android / iOS development, so compiling and emulating.

The one thing I did notice is the Firewire to my external devices seems slow using some crappy cables I had hanging around. I have two new 40Gps cables coming tonight to see if that helps.
Any recommendations for fast cables and external drives? I'm looking to migrate to a Mac mini Pro from a 2012 Mac Pro, but need some external storage solutions.

Depending on when you buy, the prices vary a lot. The best way to approach is to look for several hundred positive reviews on Amazon (think 4.5) if possible. Then focus on 60Gps or higher. The port I believe is limited to 40 or something. I'm extremely happy now. My saves were at four seconds before upgrading my cables. Now they're at one second for one gig files.

I use two Terramaster D4-300s with about 18TB of storage. Mainly 4TB drives with one 10TB drive. This is where the cables are crucial. You'll definitely want the Pro for the extra ports and speed. 32GB of RAM is pretty standard for anyone over grandma level of use.

What cabling is 60gbps? There is no cabling standard (USB4…TB4…) that is >40Gbps. Who, exactly could or would spec a 60Gbps cable for a standard that does not exist?

https://www.terra-master.com/us/d4-300.html?page=menu&mid=824 - if that is what you have, it offers the grandma speeds of 5Gbps, or call it 500MB/s max theoretical, less in practice. You can read that spec here: https://www.terra-master.com/us/products.html, where they quote around 420MB/s transfer rates. I’m confused; why do you mention best cables if it is just a basic USBC 5Gbps connection? Where is the “Pro” with the faster rates?

Caching is what would let that disk setup write 1GB in a second. The interface is only able to do a bit less than half that speed, if I’m reading the specs & model right. Your OS handles the copy in the background, while telling you in the GUI that it’s ready for the next action.

https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/72169-everything-about-thunderbolt-4-cables/ is a summary of USB4 vs TB4.

Many pro users are working just fine with 8GB. :) It all depends on the app…

So ... y'all are impressed with the Mac Mini M2 Pro Performance. How will World of Warcraft perform on the non-Pro Mac Mini M2s with 8gb / 16gb?
