really annoyed flickr now blocking use of auto uploader on free account

the cynic in me thinks it was always planned that way, a bait and switch.

lots of adds for flickr pointing out its free, its the best place to stick your pictures, 2tb space, easy auto uploader.

so like a lot of people i arranged my workflow to stick my pics on flickr, it wasnt the only choice, could have used google photos, or box.com or even paid for a service which would get me my pics plus other backup for buttons.

but flickr seemed good, and uploaded my 20 gigs of pics, all good. flickr on all of our devices


except today a message pops up saying the auto uploader won't work after 15 days unless i pay 35 quid a year.

its not a lot of cash but on principle it pisses me off and rather than pay it ill have to upload everything to google photos instead.

I hear you. I saw that and thought what the hell too. A year ago the only reason I had it was to post pictures on here with decent quality. Now I use it as my main on the go photo viewer, well that went down hill today. Nevermind, manual drag and drop it is then

i see there are a few third party uploader which arent free but far cheaper than paying for flckr pro.

anyone got any experience of Uppr (hasn't been updated in over a year though) or F-Stop?

my main worry about using a different uploader is letting it go on my photos folder and ending up with duplicates

Well from what i hear Yahoo! Is in trouble financially and so is Flickr. I actually hope Yahoo! Is not closing the service.

I'm annoyed as well. Still in the process of uploading all my pictures and yesterday this pop-up.

I like their terms of service in contrast to Google.

i dont think thats a lot given its mine and the wife's whole last 40 odd years, of holidays, living in different countries, weddings, everything, plus a fe gigs of pics of madeira which i use for the wife's work stuff.

i just checked, 19.67gb. there's 102 different folders so 102 different events or situations.


Edit I just reread your post and see you are more talking about sharing. I don't share my pics. I use Flickr to store my pics and be accessed on my phone and iPad.

When I click through Flickr I see everyone under the sun that people post. 500px seems to be more the best of the best. I wonder if Flickr would be better served going that route. If you want a place to upload full albums use Google Photos.

It's all up to the individual and how they use it. I've been on there 3+ years and well...

Flickr Pro since 2010. 579 photos posted. Just a hobby. I split stuff up. My model building photos are on Imgur, as are most of my drag race shots. Flickr gets my "art".

I have stored over 70000 photos at Flickr. Zero are public. I use it as a free cloud backup storage.

Google is a bad choice due to their terms of service and the rights on my pictures they want.

I use google for my music. It's not really mine like the photos.

if id known flickr were going to pull this **** id have gone with google in the first place. was put off by their saying about resizing pics but then at the minute my camera is only 12 mp and my phone only 8mp so maybe im unneccessarily worrying about that.

now though, do i bother to upload 20 gigs now to google, try to remember to manually upload stuff, or do i just bite the bullet and pay apple.

or do i try the two third party plugins first and see if it messes up my account by uploading everything in duplicate. plus i could pay 3 euros for one of them and then next month flickr makes 3rd party API a pro account feature.

You're trying to find on-line photo storage either for free or a very low service charge. This is doomed to fail. Free / cheap = insecure / bug prone / at their mercy.

A descent service like 500px.com is USD $25 per year for unlimited storage. And there is a marketplace if you want to sell stock photos.

Reality check: You're angry (to the point of swearing) at a company that gave you something for free.

thanks for the post, but my annoyance is at them for offering me something and then taking it away, causing me hassle. And they didnt give me it out of charity, they are a big company spending big bucks to advertise their 'free' service, if they hadn't of my pics would all be sitting in google photos or still in my box.com account. Instead ill have to upload them again or buy a 3rd party uploader which might not work well and they might cut that off too. so the reality is I'm annoyed, if thats okay.

i agree with you that the free storage market doesn't seem to be a good business to be in, sugar drive and copy.com already getting out of it, but that was flickr's call, not mine.


i am actually happy to pay for a service and probably will when i figure out what one fits me best. i need space for files too so its confusing weighing up all the options. every option seems to have a drawback, i was taken with the idea of a microsoft account but having tried it out, it won't even hold my books backup because it doesn't handle long file names.
if there isnt a proper 'fits all' solution then ill be using google photos and mega.com i guess.


EDIT google drive will only cost me 2 euro a month for 100gb which is enough for my pics, calibre, docs, everything. maybe best option?

I have a Google Docs (now Google Drive) account for the tutorials I wrote for this forum and it worked out OK for me over the years it was needed. TheReef and others who developed the browser plug ins previously needed for full size image posting used it too. Just keep in mind that Google isn't harmless, either. It's a subsidiary of a company called Alphabet that it created during a restructuring when it got to big in 2015.

That is the Flickr one, according to Google and that's the one that needs a pro account now. Unless you are using an older version maybe ?

The two third party ones are f stop and uppr but I'm hesitant to try them in case they duplicate the whole folder

My Flickr Uploadr is version 3.2.1, and works fine in El Capitan, but I've only tried manual uploads.

you can't suggest that !

although actually google in this case was right, that is the the old version and it is made by flickr, last updated in 2009, and replaced by the new version about a year ago or so. still if it works, its a great find.

I was using the uploader for backing up my family photos to Flickr, which was completely private.

I use Google's free service too.

I use another account for Flickr for my "professional" work, but it really doesn't see much action these days.
Since I'm trying to reduce the number of accounts that I have, I may close it down and just use 500px.

Flickr has lost its way and I have a feeling it's going to get shut down. I found it odd it wasn't mentioned in the products they were going to focus on, no mentioned it was going to get canned.

I may use G+ as a photography focused stream as well.
