It’s a reboot. It’s even called “Inactivity Reboot.” Another article:

From the SimplyMac page I linked to earlier:
This happens to me quite frequently. That said, there has never been 72 hours where my iPhone has been inactive, unless I’m misunderstanding this feature.

Also worth mentioning that "looking for information about scams/spyware" is exactly the wrong way to ensure your security. Practice better OpSec: Learn to tell the difference between legitimate and illegitimate communications, and don't respond (ever, for any reason) to unexpected or unknown senders. Don't plug random crap into your device. Manage your social media presence down to a bare minimum. Verify the veracity of software you download; use checksums if available. Don't do stupid things and the chances of being victimized falls to essentially zero.
While I agree with your comment in principle, and do most if not all of what you suggest the issue is most for my less computer proficient friends and relatives. For example a 92 yr old relative click on a site claim to be about college football but was a malware scam page that claimed his computer was infected and he need to pay $$$ to have them clean it. Which when he granted access they installed spyware. This falls into the category you already said, but the point is, at least in my circle, many are computer phobic and think people are trying to help. Lastly as you mention the very sophisticated scams are generally targeting specific people, however, the low level scams as what happened to my 92 year-old relative occurs fairly frequently, 3-4 times per year with a group size of about 70 people.
