congrats my 256 gb space gray 12.9 cellular came yesterday. Think I spent 25 in apps already. Love playing zen pinball and banner saga / banner saga 2 on this thing.

Congrats. I got mine last week and also a switch from the 9.7. Still getting use to it but mostly loving and, generally, not finding it "too big." When I want something smaller I switch to my mini.

I had a Pencil for the 9.7 but never used it -- I think because of lack of s/w initially and then I just forgot about it. I took it out of the drawer when I got the 12.9 and just love it now. Been using it mostly with Nebo -- a bargain IMHO at $2.99 -- to take notes and jot down quick thoughts and also editing PDFs with PDF Expert -- also a bargain at $15. These kind of uses are so much more comfortable for me on the 12.9. (BTW Costco.com has iTunes cards for 15-17% off for members. Code is emailed to you about 5 min. after purchase so go there if you are a member before you buy any apps).

I bought a cheap plastic back cover for Amazon but even though it's fairly light it makes the 12.9 feel too heavy so I removed it. I've got a lighter, thinner one coming in. Hopefully that fares better. I like to keep the back clean for resale.

One other thing I've noticed is that going direct from using the 12.9 to a 4.7 iPhone WOW! does the iPhone screen seem tiny. Amazing the power of perception. I remember when I got my 4.7 and thought it was huge.

I chose to get the 10.5 over the 12.9. I think the thick bezels make the 12.9 looks so "out of date". But the display on the pros on that size is great, its just a bit too big for me personally.

Enjoy your devices whatever size you choose!

Happy that you finally got your iPad--sucks that all the people ordering the 12.9" keep having to wait. I always hate that part, especially when I've already sold my "old" iPad to fund the purchase of the new one. I always get such joy out of hearing the FedEx driver ring the doorbell on new iPad/new iPhone day though. Almost makes the wait worth it. ;)

It's kind of funny -- with laptops I've always been quite happy with the 15" and the smaller, and briefly, larger size never moved me. But the iPad, I really want one of each size. I know it's not practical and silly. Even still I have a mini and a 12.9. Had iPad 1-iPP 9.7s. Lust for the 10.5 even still. They are all really great at different things.

I have almost gone for the 12.9" twice now, but keep gravitating back to the smaller Pro models. Someday I will give the 12.9" a shot and see what I think. My friend raves about his all the time.

Spot on. There are times (when not using MacBook Pro) that I'd love to be using a 12.9". But for the majority of the time I prefer the form factor of 10.5 in more scenarios that I'd prefer the 12.9", so the 10.5" it is!

The 10.5 was tempting but for art the more screen I can use in Astro pad the better. So 12.9 it is. It's replacing my laptop for most things

I too had concerns about the 12.9's portability because of some of the comments and reviews I'd read online. But I have been very pleasantly surprised in that respect. I had initially intended to keep my iPad Air 2 as a more portable device for situations where I found the 12.9 too big - but such situations are just nor arising. It took a little getting used to at first, but the more I use it, the more 'normal' the form factor comes to feel. My primary worry was that it would be too heavy for holding one-handed for sketching whilst out and about, but even this concern has proved exaggerated (it's obviously a little less comfortable than the Air for this, but perfectly doable). As others have said, though, the 12.9 is not ideal for those intending to use it on a busy commute or for plane travel.

How is the on-screen keyboard like to type on in bed? I just tried it at the store and loved it, but I'm worried it'll be callenging to type on when laying with it in bed

Actually, now that you mention it, I think this is another scenario where the 12.9 is less than ideal. When holding it upright in landscape mode it's impossible to reach all the keys with your thumbs, so you have to type with one finger. It's okay in portrait mode, though. The iPad Mini is actually the only iPad I find comfortable for landscape typing when holding in both hands.
I actually use one of these stands for watching videos in bed - I think it would work for typing as well:

What difficulties did you experience? Hard to put up on those tiny tables?
Yes. As well as simply holding it to read or play games. I know that others have said they have no issues using their 12.9 Pro's on a plane, and I believe them. But for me, it is so cramped. The screen is so close that to watch a video fullscreen is not enjoyable.

The 12.9 inch is portable. It fits in most bags.
My bad: wrong wording in my question. What I meant by "portable" was more around the house, on the sofa, during bed time etc...

I'm still on the fences. Definitely not buying this year. Waiting and hoping for a smaller/lighter 12.9" next year to compare to the 10.5".

I bought this stand looking forward to using the 12.9". It's great for long movies in bed or for placing the iPad at eye-level on a table.

It's expensive but it's very sturdy. Great reviews on amazon.

Very interested to know portability vs deskability of the larger form factor.

I find it pretty comfortable around the house and in bed. Often i use the ASK and just rest it on my lap. It is big though, so you may bump it against a wall or bookcase every now and then as i do lol.
