Hi Guys,

Which Blue ray burne/DVD burner drive you recommend for the mac fo a great deal of a price.

bdr205 works if you disable the 'put drives to sleep' option in energy saver.

i've heard nothing but good things about that LG model that wonderspark linked to.

I never sleep my Mac, but if I did, you only have to put a disc in the BD drive and it will sleep normally, FYI.

Also, it will play Blu-ray movies directly from the disc (even store bought ones) if you run MakeMKV for 30 seconds (to decode), hit the link to the movie file, copy and paste the address it gives into VLC, and play from there. It takes about 60 seconds total to do all that, but then it plays great (on my 30" ACD), and you don't have to navigate all the BS menus and warning screens, so I think it's actually better that Steve Jobs hates Blu-ray. I hate iTunes, so we're even.

I've been using with my Mac Pro 2009 the Pioneer BDR-206 and works fine. I bought at Amazon.com.

correct, the -206 model does not have the sleep issue that the -205 does.

I'm currently using a BDR-206BKS as an external FireWire drive on my MacBook Pro but as soon as my Mac Pro is all set up (waiting for an SSD drive) I'll probably make it an internal one replacing the existing (Not So) SuperDrive.

So far the BDR-206 has performed flawlessly with Toast 10 Titanium. Highly recommended. Got mine for a great price at Platinum Micro.

What about LITE-ON and ASUS drives?

NewEgg is currently offering 15% off internal Blu-Ray drives (promo code"EMCKDKC73", expires June 8, so be quick!)

It is hard to find the above mentioned drives; I wonder if LITE-ON or ASUS Blu-Ray drives would be okay. Is there any reason why the following would not work:

ASUS BW-12B1LT

LITE-ON iHBS212

If anyone has some feedback with above drives, would love to hear it!

No it's not.

Thanks. There is a previous comment that there are sleep problem with the -206 Pioneer drive, and several of the other models were released >8 months ago. I was looking for more recent products, and the 15% off at NewEgg made those drives particularly good value.

Have a look at the Apple forums, I promise you there is a sleep problem with the 206. I for one can tell you the problem is here - I have it.

Even OWC, who sell the Pioneer -206, acknowledge a sleep problem with this drive.

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Pioneer/BDR206BKMP/

The fine print under Technical Notes of the above website states:

OWC Note:
Requires disabling of hard disk sleep in Mac Pro Systems to prevent drive from disappearing during sleep.
To disable hard disk sleep go to the Apple --->System Preferences ---> Energy Saver and uncheck "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible."

yeah, it looks like the early reports of the -206 pioneer working with drive sleep were inaccurate.
still, all you have to do is change the setting in energy saver.
H2s04- i have the 205, the 206 comment I made was based on other people's posts around the webs, which look to be incorrect. sorry for the confusion.

Looks like Newegg has changed the normal price of the LG to match the prior 15% ($85) and are including a 5-pack of BD-R too, so it's an even better deal today.

Good spot! Plus free shipping, makes it a fantastic deal! Very tempted to test it...
