I ended up buying one of the LGs. I'll test it for a few weeks and see how it goes.
Good luck with it, please let us know how it goes once you test it. I assume you got it for the good price --- it's gone back up to $100 !

Anyone own Buffalo BR3D-12U3 ?
It's an external model with USB 3.0 (still waiting for TB adapters). Not sure how it performs with Macs.
My main concern is multi-region DVD playback. That's essential.
Even OWC, who sell the Pioneer -206, acknowledge a sleep problem with this drive.

The fine print under Technical Notes of the above website states:

The price is back down to $85.
After about a week and half of use, I haven't noticed any problems. There aren't weird spinning up noises when the tray is empty and the computer doesn't wake up from sleep periodically. Or if it is waking up from sleep periodically, it's not doing it when I'm around.
I have not had the chance to make burns yet. Life is too busy at the moment. I do have some HD projects though and I look forward to finalizing them onto blu-ray discs.
I've played a few commercial blu-rays. The drive seems adequate, but not perfect. Ideally there should be no noticeable drive noise during playback of a movie. Perhaps due to the method used to play commercial blu-rays, the drive stops and starts as the movie is streaming. It would be better to constantly run at 1x with a buffer, but MakeMKV streaming method appears to go full speed, fill up the buffer, stop the drive, run out of buffer, go full speed again, etc. I don't think this is the drive's fault though, I suspect the software.
I'm not interested in ripping blu-rays, so I can't comment on the speed of that or if there is a riplock firmware.

I've been using a Pioner BDR-206 -- been working great.
