Ah.. OK, for whatever reason I kept seeing the Core Duo designation on the Apple website and thinking in my head "Core 2 Duo". Something didn't jive. I just needed the wakeup slap and now it is obvious that the hopeful impending release will bump these to the more competitive Core "2" chips.
Thanks. I do believe it is worth the wait then!
if or not it's worth to wait depend on what you do... if you won't make use of the extra horse power immediately, you are better off getting it now, because if you are thinking about future proof, they are pratically at the same level...
e.g. you wouldn't use neither 486PC or 586PC to do cs2 work

yeah dude, you are partially right... actually I heard from Apple sources about a 30-inch laptop with a forklift truck to carry it at no additional cost (they are equiped with firewire 800 to connect both devices).

God, we are getting mad... :( there's no fate...

Yeah, you're right. It's just the feeling of getting the max performance for the dollar whether or not I really use it.... Being that the updates might be just days away. I know there is no way to future proof in the computer world.

that's why i'm holding off until the MBP refreshes... since you're going to spend that much $ you might as well get the latest edition

That is the smartest thing you can do if you don't absolutely need a new computer right now. While the speed increase, power consumption difference, battery life, etc. from yonah to merom might be minimal, the possibilities of minor but beneficial additions and case redesigns could also be worth the wait.

At the very least, wait until Photokina next week before anyone makes a decision to buy. The probability that we'll see new C2D MBP's is looking good. Not guaranteed of course, but looking good.

but the possibility that you cant get the printer rebate... is it worth it? i dont know, you can only answer for yourself
i bought mine in the tax free weekend, got ipod and printer... all in all i saved about $500 ~ 600? it's well worth it to not wait.

Then it comes down to personal preference. To me, getting in on the free iPod deal was outweighed by the prospect of an update to the MBP line in the near future. Since I don't need a computer right now, I opted out of the iPod deal since I didn't need or want one of those either (already have a couple anyway.)

If I understand correctly, the tax free weekend was only in Missouri (I grew up in southwest Missouri. How often do they do the tax free weekend?) Unfortunately where I live (California), there is not a tax free weekend. There are about 15 states that are fortunate enough to participate in that program. So I can see why you might have wanted to pounce and take advantage of that. For most of the country, this doesn't happen unfortunately.

But again, it's up to the individual. With the possibility of a refresh just days away, I think it would be slightly insane to buy the current line as it stands today. And since the iPod deal isn't an option anymore, my advice... wait. Take it as you (the people who are considering the buy) will.

C2D is definately coming to the next MBP, but all the other specs are good, I don't see Apple changing anything else dramatically anytime soon.
With that said, what I would like to see:
15" with DL DVD Burner
15" with FW800
Either make standard, or offer as an upgrade, a higher resolution display option for both the 15" and 17" models. I know people with Dell's purchased over a year ago that have 17" 1920x1200 displays, the 17" MBP should have this also.
This is all I can think of that I would have liked to see in my MBP.

yes, with the iPod rebate deal gone & Photokina just a few days ahead.. there's no sense in buying anything right away (unless you desperately need it for work/school right away)

Yeah, I think Apple should start offering even higher end options (like the 1920x1200 video) only because people are going to start comparing hardware from Dell or HP or Acer to Apple and say, "why doesn't Apple offer so and so"... Not considering the great software that ships with Apple systems.
Software aside though, Apple has jumped into the same hardware boat as everyone else now & should be the leader, not the follower...

..for me:)

S-Video would be nice. I have used my PowerBook hooked into the tv on a number of occasions. great for watching movies.

I agree that 1920x1200 on 17'' would be sweet. But as for specs, almost everything is good. The GPU in the MBP is still not that great. Not a puny card, but I would expect a mobile x1800. If they just speed bump and don't change GPU or resolution, I am going for a Rev A to save money.

According to ATI both the Mobility X1800 (450Mhz core with 12 pixel shader pipelines and 500Mhz ram) and Mobility X1800XT (550Mhz core with 16 pixel shader pipelines and 650Mhz ram) fits within a Thermal Design Power of 25-35Watt.

Anyone know what the total Thermal Design Power of the current MacBook Pro is?

The Mobility X1600 has a TDP of 17Watt. The new Geforce 7900GS has a TDP of 20Watt.

Does 31 sound about right ;)

Yes - that was just for the Core Duo - re-reading the thread I see you are after the TOTAL MBP TDP - sorry.

No worries :)

Processor (Yonah) 31Watt
Graphic Card (M56) somewhere below 17Watt
