Any theories on how long the 2012 will be upgradable to the latest OS X?

Apple's documented obsolescence policy is approximately 7 years after it was last made. This is why the 2009 went obsolete in 2016.

So the 2012 should go officially obsolete around 2019.

If you don't absolutely need the compatibility straightaway, I would go for a baseline MP 4,1 and upgrade it from there. You can get one for ~$400 even around $350 if your lucky.

It did seem a little high, but I won't need to put RAM or a CPU into it. I came into a little bit of money recently, and if I don't splurge now, I'll just end up spending it on food and bills and stuff. It'll be a decent upgrade from my 1,1, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger.

Sigh, two popped rivets floating around inside the case, and the case looks like someone took a hammer to it...

That sucks. Were there pictures before you purchased it? What did its shipping package look like?
I did an unboxing video, and showed one of the busted rivets. It wasn't UPS. That box was in great shape. The other is the rivet that holds the feet together. After booting it up, it looks as if the video card is bad too.

I could almost explain the busted rivets - they likely didn't shake the darn thing to hear if something was rattling around, but the bad video card? they claim to test these things for several hours before shipping... how did they miss that? Mac of all Trades opens in an hour and I'll call them. They'll likely want the unit back. It sucks, because I had to wait a week and a half to get the thing.
