Paid $850 for it from the refurb store, and now its delivered and sitting next to me.

Now I'm strugging, my spouse keeps saying--why not get the 20"?

I could return it unopened...

But part of me says. 1) this is a great price, 2) the size will ultimately fit in better with my other equipment, 3) the Bugs are likely already worked out...

So why not?

Open it or send back...

(I know I sound really stupid...)

If you have the money get the new one...

If you don't... then just enjoy the mac already sitting beside you.

Use the savings from the 17" and buy a refurb iPhone? :D

Sadly, I think I'd budget it towards getting something like an echo audiofire12 interface. that would go really well with my copy of logic pro 7.2, live 6, zebra 2.2, korg legacy collection, fabfilter gear, and amt8.

(Switching from a PC with a Hammerfall PCI card, so I'll need a decent firewire interface.)

WOOSH!!! I know nothing about all that stuff! Audio gear I gather.

The only thing about old iMac VS the new ones is that people have said that the performance on the new ones is *worse* than the old ones as Apple has not optimized the driver for the video card. I think this only really applies to gamers - I have no idea if that would impact your applications. That is a lot of machine for $850 though!

Isn't it great when you have an awesome wife who looks at the functionality of something instead of just the price? Aka, 20" vs 17". She sounds like a good one! :D

Definately.

Yep, its audio gear for recording. Luckily most of my software (with the exception of a few misc stuff) is already cross platform, so I'm basically sorted.

Now we're all jealous ... not about your new Mac, but for a spouse that wants you to spend MORE money on your Mac stuff. ;)

I'd say keep it. I ended up picking up a new open box return for my workplace for $799 from Fry's. It is turning out to be a sweet, very capable machine. Fry's also had a new open box 1.83 17" iMac for $599 I picked up for my mother-in-law to replace her 800MHz iMac G4 15".

That is a very capable machine you got, so either decision is going to result is a good computing experience.

Now that I've got it open...

How do I tell which version of Ilife i've got.

The web page said it would come with 08, but it looks like its all 2006 programs.

It only came with two OSX install disks. should it have come with more?

there should be a 3rd slip in disk containing iLife 08..when did you order this machine? call apple support and explain..and they should mail you one for free as long as the purchase date is after aug 7th

Well, there are some ilife apps installed, but the copywrite dates on the about screens say 2006... Leading me to suspect that they're older versions. Imovie is called imovie HD for example.

I purchased on Aug 21.

I note that sometimes when you look at a refurb description pages it will say iLife 06 while others will say iLife 08. On the page I ordered it said (and still says--iLife '08 would come with this computer.)

Linky.

I'm on hold with tech support now.

I think if the model purchased was no longer being sold as new before the date that iLife08 was released, then they'll want to say that that configuration came with 06 and that's that. But, no harm done in asking for the latest since this is a new sale.

Let us know what you end up with...

how is it on hold?

As in, the OP is on the telephone with them right now. :)

I don't think I'll push it.

I was nice to them, they were nice to me... Especially when I emailed them the link. :)

I got off the phone just before 12:00 pm.

They're going to express ship it to me.

Now that I think of it, I should have tried to get iWork tossed in just for having to put up with their hold music for so long.
