Still, I think I might shy away from buying either a laptop or iPad from the refurb store because of potential issues from wear & tear (bumps, jostling, etc).

There is no wear or tear on refurb models:

We test and certify all Apple refurbished products and include a 1-year warranty.
All refurbished iPad models also include a brand new battery and outer shell

These refurbs are coming from stupid consumers that purchase the iPad then return the thing when they don't know what to do with it. There's nothing wrong with these.

Back when I purchased my refurb 3GS, the thing looked & functioned exactly as new. Indistinguishable.

Absolutely, understood. :) My only point was that some refurb models could have been bumped around and jostled enough by their original owners to cause internal wear that isn't evident in testing now, but could grow to become a problem later on. In all likelihood, most refurbs are what you say - early returns by customers who didn't know what they wanted to buy. But it's something to consider; in the case of these iPads, I'd be more likely to jump on a refurb if it were $80-100 off. For just $50, I like the piece of mind that I'm the only one who mistreated my device. ;)

Yep, and my refurb Mac mini was also the same - absolutely pristine. And a better deal than the refurb iPads, as it was $100 off. :D

Ordered mine on Saturday with the $12 shipping upgrade to 2-3 shipping.
Shipped from Shenzhen, CN on the 20th at the crack of dawn China time, and is now in my hands this afternoon! They overnighted it from China to Virginia for the price of 2-3 shipping, thats some service.
Showed up in a nice white box (a step up from old refurb boxes, this one has a nice appearance), not a scratch on it, great battery, I give it a 10/10.

Wow, that's great -- congrats! :)
