Showing my age, but I sure loved those games. Is there anything NEW that is of that same type for Mac?

Myst!

I loved Myst, very awesome game. Steam has a couple versions of Myst on there. The original, RealMyst - a first person walk around type thing, and the special edition, which is supposed to be 'remastered' with improved sound and graphics. Have you played the sequels (Riven and the rest)?

As for different games, I don't know of any exactly like Myst, nothing quite like it... But the 'submachine' series is a pretty good (and free!) flash point n' click series if that's what you're looking for.

Showing your age? Myst V only came out six years ago. I have older games that installed on my 2011 MBP :)

On an equivalence bases, there pretty much hasn't been anything like it out in a while. The RHEM series is a pretty decent carbon copy but not that interesting but some of http://www.coladia.com/en/games/mac 's games might fit with what you're looking for. Especially the Mysterious Island series.

I used to want to play Myst soooo freaking badly and couldn't because my parents refused to get a computer. They didn't see a use for one (even though I wanted to be a computer programmer, go figure : / )

Anyway I finally got my hands on the game when it came out for Sega Saturn and LOVED it. Its a classic.

Yes I remember... :)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I also didn't know it was avail for iPad. It was so long ago that I played it (the entire series) that perhaps it would be fun again on the iPad.

Off in search of all the games you guys suggested. Thanks again!

Kudos for owning a Saturn.

I still remember seeing the preview video on a Quadro 840av on a 20" CRT and being completely blown away, even though the video was 160x160, or something like that.

The sad part, is that I never played Myst beyond a few clicks and I have friends that would always tell me about how they started to dream about the environments.

Myst just managed to destroy the text adventure games that really spurred one's imagination. It's like reading the book or watching a movie.

Try Zork (now over 30 years old), which I conveniently have compiled for OS X on my website at http://almy.us/dungeon.html

Yep, I remember.

I have a soft spot for those old text adventures too. I had quite a few on the C64. I also played one of the Zork games on someone else's PC and loved it.

Myst was still entertaining, but it did have a very lonely feel about it — a bit like going into Second Life and finding that there's no one else logged in.

Speaking of removing imagination, I have a stronger dislike for the way PC games became dominated by these seemingly identical (in terms of gameplay) 3D world-walk-around things. But one of the nice things about iOS for me has been the return of intelligent little 2D strategy and puzzle games. Now if only they'd bring out Lemmings on iOS!

Well, if any of you are into modern adventure style games with no real emphasis on action. Check out the Penumbra games and Amnesia. Yes they're horror themed, but, it's as close to an old walk around adventure game as you can get these days.

That was part of its charm.

Someone tried. He had it pretty much finished before getting a cease and desist, and never ended up submitting it.

Yeah, I saw that. Very sad when the IP owner won't do anything with it, and stops others from doing so. The smart thing would have been for them to offer the indie-developers some money for the code and then put it on the App Store for $1 or something.

I've downloaded 'Chicks', which is a pretty decent imitation, but it's just not the same… sigh.

@Kalsta: I know what you mean. I'm also desperately looking for some old classics to be converted but it's pretty sure that they won't come out.

Thinking of Flood, Warlords, Turrican, etc.

From Steam I purchased "The Dig", "Loom" and "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis" I haven't played Loom or IJ yet but "The Dig" was down right awesome. I had always wanted to play the game, but never did until this past holiday season. Now I'm glad that I did. Written by Steven Spielberg and Orson Scott Card (aka, author of Ender's Game); very very well done.

Zork I, II, III were just awesome memories, I don't know how many hours I spent in the great underground empire. Adventure was my first real game, but I really preferred the Zork series.

Every time I see that image of Myst I instantly get that sound when you travel from book to book. (That "vroooooong" sound... if you played Myst, you know it!)

I actually used Myst as an excuse to save up and purchase an Apple 300 External CD drive (with CD caddy... no stinking trays!) for my IIci. So worth it!

The closest I've come to another Myst-like game is Drawn: The Painted Tower on iPad. Except I was quite disappointed with the ending. It did have a similar feel though.

If you have access to Windows, you can get the Myst games (Riven, etc.) at Good Old Games:

I feel like the first two were pretty iconic and a huge part of my childhood. They were also, at the time, one of the few major games that was available on the Mac platform.

I remember buying some collector's edition of Myst that had a T-Shirt, a hint guide, that "Book of Atrus" novel (which I still think is a pretty good book), and some other stuff.

I had a very tough time playing them after the 3rd one or so. I felt like they became the same game and largely lacking in originality.

Rhem series

I know graphicwise it can not keep up with the Myst series of games, but I was amazed at the depht of the gameplay of the Rhem games. The latest is Rhem 4 which was released last year for Mac and PC:

If it is more enigmas and riddles you are after, this one is for you. If you are looking mainly for great gfx...don´t bother...
