I had a very tough time playing them after the 3rd one or so. I felt like they became the same game and largely lacking in originality.

That's because everything after Riven (except Uru) was made by Ubisoft, not Cyan. I think Cyan had a little more influence in Myst III: Exile, but that and everything afterward was mostly Ubisoft, instead of the original creators.

Man, I miss that game. I have all five versions of that game. They just don't make games like that anymore.

Now tell me the truth.....in the first Myst......when you encounted that safe, did you simply enter in every number until it unlocked? Or did you figure it out by using strategy? ;)

Myst III was developed solely by Presto. IV was Ubisoft, V was Cyan (but its development was rushed.)

I know graphicwise it can not keep up with the Myst series of games, but I was amazed at the depht of the gameplay of the Rhem games. The latest is Rhem 4 which was released last year for Mac and PC:

If it is more enigmas and riddles you are after, this one is for you. If you are looking mainly for great gfx...don´t bother...

I don't care about the graphics, but how is the story? Is the game just a series of puzzles, or are the puzzles fully integrated into the world, like Riven?
