Or don't be clumsy...

screen protectors are awful and look awful IMO. Never used one for more than 5 secs

My own anecdotal experience is that the iPhone displays are durable enough where I don’t use screen protectors and I don’t worry about scratches, scrapes and have not dropped my iPhone to date. All my iPhones are in excellent condition, but then again, I’m also somebody that’s really cautious with them.

Does the lip help? I use a case with a lip but was wondering if it actually helps
I feel like it helps. As rui before said in those situations. The times I’ve shattered the glass on my iPhones are when I didn’t have a case on it. (I tend to abuse my devices and am careless with them, MacBooks iPads iPhones etc. I have a bad habit of carrying my MacBook by the screen and wonder why the screen breaks)

For me, no. I used to use them but in ten years I’ve broken/cracked exactly 0 screens. If I do, well that’s what AppleCare is for. I think I care a bit less since moving to the IUP, micro-scratches don’t bother me and don’t bother Apple when I hand it back.

For my wife, even though I have AppleCare on her phone. Yes definitely, I don’t know how she does it but she cracks her screen protector with monotonous regularity. I actually keep a stock of them at home just to keep up with her damaging them.

I put a glass screen protector on my X as soon as I got it. Then the protector got cracked so I took it off. Had it off for 2 weeks and the phone was fine. However I have a 21 month old who is always picking up my phone and dropping it and sometimes throwing it in his playpen. So I put another protector on as it’s too risky not to have one. Never smashed a phone screen before. I do have insurance in case I have any mishaps but I’d be upset if I had to use it because I wasn’t using a screen protector!

screen protector will save the oleophobic coating and prevent micro scratches
These 2 things make it worth while
And the bonus is when you sell the phone take the screen protector off and the iPhones like brand new
Can’t go wrong

There are situations where screen protectors are good investments. However, for the typical consumer, they are simply the highest margin accessory known to man.
A good case should be the priority. All my smartphones nevertheless have any screen protectors on, but cases have saved them here and there.
