Oh no you can't surf eBay with that card hehe I get it he doesn't want people flashing 20 or 30 dollar cards and selling them for 100 bucks for profit. when he patched the EFI

But I do not understand someone who keeps asking once the help has been denied. I find this rude and inappropriate.

I don't understand or may be you didn't understand what the conversation was about.

This is the only place and the only thread I have asked for help. If you don't want to help why waste your time in posting these comments when you have no idea of what is being discussed here. It's not like someone is forcing you to post one here ?

Your post was informative, as it told me that there are people out there who know how to change the string. It's just very exhausting as I am not a software person but a hardware guy, actually an electronics engineer.

My reasoning was if someone knew how to do it and shared the information, then I could go and get for example a hex editor and look for the string and remove it. I am one bit closer now but it is really exhausting going through 23 pages of Florian's post and trying to replicate what he did with the rom and what programs he used.
MacVidCards does more than change the string. He modifies the firmware so PC cards can be used on the Mac. He has a business selling such cards.

My recommendation is for you to ignore these posters as they're not interested in assisting you.

His point is if you actually care you'll figure it out no matter how time consuming, you've been told no that's the end of the thread.

I find it doubtful most people looking for such a card would care if it said "NO EBAY !!" I didn't even know what was being referred to until I started reading the thread. In addition if someone wants to "crack" his work and resell cards for $100 profit they're going to do it one way or another. OP was reasonable with saying he understood people might not want the information readily available on a public forum and thus said PM was welcome.

And finally the modification to the firmware to make it function in a Mac is just that...a modification of someone else's work. I find it ironic those who make such modifications don't want their work to go to someone else's benefit.

Probably most buyers wouldn't care about it, but still most eBay sellers (at least those with a little bit of self esteem left) won't sell a GPU with that ugly string in there. I can be pretty sure about this, given the number of PM's I've received regarding the removal of it...

We (partly) agree in one point though:

And exactly for this reason it shouldn't be sold at all! I've helped numerous people to get their PC GPUs flashed, explaining that there's little magic involved, just downloading pre-build files, running a few commands in the Terminal and executing atiflash/nvflash.
Of course I know that some less tech savvy people would never dare to do this on their own, so they need to buy a plug'n'play GPU, where the eBay guys come into play. And I could except this, if they where completely honest to their customers, including:
  • an explanation that they're in fact selling old PC hardware with hacked firmware (which many people could do on their own)
  • giving proper credit where it's due
  • explaining the benefits of "Mac Edition" GPUs, also mentioning that they are NOT necessary for basic functionality
Barely anyone does this though, their businesses mostly rely on tricking customers into thinking that they're purchasing official "Mac Edition" hardware with official Apple support. And those who admit selling flashed PC GPUs advertise themselves as Mac GPU geniuses while they barely know what they're doing, never being able to give properly support and troubleshoot "their products". IMO that's quite close to fraud, and that's what I don't want to support.

I found it !! Have to say, took some time but not that long. ;)

To any one who needs to do this, I will go a bit further and say the actual clue is in post no: 46 by Florian at Netkas forum. Again to reiterate, I will not be selling my card, or have plans to buy HD 5770 and reflash them and make a quick buck. I have already made my million.

Please respect why Fl0r!an did that. It's good to know that you found out how to do it. As we said, it's not that hard. But please keep it for yourself and do NOT make it public.

As I have said, I can only give you my word (or type it in here).

But now I have more questions as to why this was done this way? Is it to make it more complicated for the copy-pasters ? So many questions.

Well, in fact I've "open sourced" all relevant information @ netkas.org, described all my findings and experiments so anyone who wants to contribute can do so. The only thing missing is a "clean" version of the HD 5770 EFI (which can't do anything better than the public one). I'm not selling any GPUs, so there's no need to keep anything private. I just don't want to hand out gifts to scumbags ripping off people on eBay by selling them overpriced ancient (and often badly flashed) GPUs.

Removing that "anti ebay string" is a rather trivial task, I didn't even bother encrypting/hiding anything (which wasn't necessary since most of those "eBay guys" can't do more than typing "atiflash" in a command prompt). All necessary information is available online, most even within my thread at netkas.org. Just not that explicitely.

I know and I support you. But it’s an old card and at this point whoever flashed it shouldn’t need to support it outside warranty periods, if it is. So I tell the guy to find a PC modder.

I understand your rational however we're not talking an unscrupulous Ebay seller but an individual who came here asking for help. Yes, there's no knowing who he is but the attitude the forum had against the OP was surprising. As we see he was able to figure it out so what value did denying him a simple explanation achieve?

Maybe, maybe not.

I wouldn't say that a MacRumors Newbie with no posting history other than a thread about removing "No Ebay" is definitely 100% not an unscrupulous Ebay seller.

And in the end he managed to crack the code fairly quickly and can do as he pleases. So what was accomplished by not helping him?

I've learned some new things, and I've been entertained, so there are two accomplishments. I want to see what happens when he changes the string... will he also change other bits to make it actually work as desired? Good times!

As I have said in previous posts, I cannot prove who I am or what I do. It’s just a simple case of trusting what I write here.

I did try to ignore the no eBay but every time I started up the Mac my mind would say something is not fixed yet. Maybe one day I will have enough rep to be trusted ?

Hi wonderspark,

I only wanted to change the string. The card is working fine. There was nothing else I wanted to do to it.

Being an electronics engineer, it wasn’t hard for me to decode how to make the card run at 5gt/s which I have done.

The whole point of me registering and joining the forum was to discuss, which is what I thought the whole point of a forum was for.

Although I don’t blame anyone, I do understand a newbie asking for things which have been kept a secret would be hard to disclose. But all I wanted was a starting point.

This is also the reason why I did not post my rom in here because I know someone will rip it off. Again huge respect to guys who have made this possible.

I have only won half the battle, that is, figuring out where it is, ther other half is still yet to be figured out.

Because it's trivial to implement (didn't take me more than a few seconds) and hard to bypass by "copy pasters" (as the past has shown).
I could also have encrypted or obscured the string, implement sanity checks or similar, but anyone able to use a disassembler would figure it out sooner or later, so IMO it's not worth the trouble.

Of course anyone is free to use and modify the files I've uploaded, maybe someone will come up with further improved versions (e.g. HD 5870/6870/7870 with digital boot screens on all ports, not just DVI), I'm sure it's not impossible and I'd gladly support this. I just won't publish anything that might help to rip off people on eBay.

If you are referring to me, I wouldn't know how to help.

If you are referring to the others, you should ask them. But it sounds like in the past they've been tricked into spending their own free time helping out a practice that they don't like.

Hi Everybody,

Thank you for the supporters and non-supporters. I have achieved what I needed, which was a clue on how to change the string to what it should be. It was a huge learning curve but I have now flashed the card to what it should be and am happy.

I can now move on to future upgrades, which is getting two x5355 and then a few hard drives and finally windows 10. I also have to replace the dvd drive, which has becom "weak" for which I will be using a sata to ide converter. The reason I chose x5355 over x5365 was price. I can get two x5355 for £12 but have to pay £50 for two x5365 which I think is not value for money for what I am doing. I might get a hd 5870 in the future but not sure at this moment.

With what I have learnt here, the potential is huge but with great power comes great responsibility. I can assure you that if you were search and analyse everything that is presented here, the string can be removed very easily. It is so easy that once you find you will be like, wow, that was so simple. Please do not send me pm's (I already have 10) asking how to do it, I will not be disclosing it as I think that privilege belongs to Florian who did all the hard work in doing the research and sharing his work for which I am great full.

I also have a hd 6850 which I might try to flash but not now or tomorrow, when I get the time. That is another project and I think I will be back here asking for help. Please do not shoot me down, all I want is someone to show me where to start. Thanks again for the positive and negative comments.

It was a rhetorical question.
