I’ve had people use the reaction to my opinions or my perspectives; it really sucks and discourages me from participating more.
So you would feel better if they replied with a "LOL" or "ROFL"? Or would you want those banned as well?

I feel a better option would be for you to understand there are many people out there that are rude and disagree with you. What those people say is not a commentary on you personally and you should simply ignore them and/or block them.

I think this is a huge issue on this forum. Everywhere I post I always get someone putting the laugh reaction, or angry reaction to something they disagree with. This comes off as rather rude and disrespectful. If someone disagrees they should be able to state their opinion respectfully instead of piling onto something they don't like and spamming the user with emojis. I think these emojis should be removed from this forum.

To be fair, you post very funny things. Maybe think of it as they are laughing with you rather than at you.

Most of your recent posts didn't have a reaction. The few posts that did seemed warranted.

I don't think this make sense. If someone posts something silly, do you really want to see a thousand nearly identical posts explaining why it is silly? An emoji reaction makes a cleaner thread. If anything, I would love to see the return of the disagree emoji.

People tend to use the laughing emoji in a cynical way and I agree this can be rude. Sometimes you'd wish someone wrote an actual reply because you cannot always figure out where they are coming from. Other times I reread my comment and can see it was silly, not what I intended. You have to be able to read to room on the forums, which is not always easy.

Just a tidbit, the disagree reaction is only available in the news section and has a daily limit. So this might explain getting an 'alternative' reaction in other places, for a lack of a thumbs down.

I don’t understand what is “funny” about simply sharing an opinion on something. I personally would like all reactions to be removed minus the like emoji. Other forums have it that way and it’s much cleaner and simpler without being spammed with emojis and notifications that contribute nothing to the discussions in the threads. It’s much more likely that people are being disrespectful since I have been harassed in other ways before but that’s been dealt with.

You can disable all the notifications for reactions. If you do that, then the only way you'll know about reactions on your posts is if you go and look for them.

To disable reaction notifications:
1. Go to your site Preferences page:
(That link goes directly to your personal Preferences page, if you're logged in.
Otherwise it does nothing.)

2. Scroll down to this section:
Receive a notification when someone…

3. Uncheck every relevant "Alert" checkbox in that section.
The several settings for reactions are named "Reacts to ...".

4. Click the "Save" button at the bottom

If you want to view reactions, click the "Reactions received" in the left-hand sidebar.

Laughing emoji can mean, erhm, "nicely" put: "I feel like you do not get the point and are in my opinion so far off that I do not think it is worth my time to reply, in fact, it is in my view a silly comment and it made me laugh in content because I know better".

That should help at least, thank you.

However I still consider it an issue, if people are going to abuse the reactions to harass people.

This is very helpful. I was spammed with the laughing emoji once and the notifications were kind of annoying, I’ll implement this.

I think that if you can post the laughing emoji, you can type out a well-formulated response to something that you disagree with, otherwise what is the point of it anyway? But that’s just me…

Agreed. It should just be removed.

I'm all-in on restricting others' ability to express themselves!

That is all.
Rather than using an emoticon or emoji to respond to this, I am going to use words in order to (hopefully) bring some clarification or at least additional interpretation of what was presented in this post..... As it does add more food for thought here.

Splifingate, I am assuming that this is written with tongue-in-cheek, totally intended to be sarcastic. Right?

This quite nicely illustrates another big issue when it comes to people communicating online. The problem then becomes that sometimes even when one does write something in words there is still room for misinterpretation, misunderstanding, confusion. That certainly adds to the possibilities inherent in misinterpretation, misunderstanding and confusion when a response or "reaction" is provided with only the use of emoticons or emojis.

Adding in the fact that in a large international forum there are going to be participants from many backgrounds, many cultures, many age groups, many ways of living and personally interpreting life...... It isn't surprising that there are clashes here-and-there when someone writes something in a post and then the response isn't quite what he or she expected or maybe even understands.

Welcome to the vibrant, always interesting and exciting and definitely at times confusing world of communicating on the Worldwide Web/Internet!

I’ve often found the laughing emoji to be irritating. For a while, any positive post about Vision Pro received the laughing emoji from the same people. Meh. I got over it.

I often try to inject some humor into a discussion so I appreciate when people leave the laughing emoji saying they liked the joke. I’m no Fozzie Bear though.

Similarly, I appreciate a good joke and enjoy leaving the laughing emoji when a post is really funny.

Maybe a handful of times I’ve used it in a negative way when someone types a long post that’s an obvious conspiracy theory. Maybe that is mean. But I don’t want to start an exchange about why their theory is complete balderdash.

Correct *smile*

Hear. Hear.

I think the forum would be a lot less fun without the laughing emoji. Yes some people use it consistently to be mean. But so many use it as a good natured laugh at a joke.

It’s a forum. People are going to disagree. It’s part of expressing an opinion.
I still think it should be removed. The forum is better when there are less avenues for harassment and abuse.

Just curious if anyone or any Moderator could answer this.

If someone repeatedly gives every post you make the laughing emoji, would that fall under this rule:

Taunting. Mocking or taunting another forum member is not acceptable.

Or is there another rule that would stop that behavior?

I don’t regardless that emoji as either. I view it as people disagreeing with my opinion. Yes, they’re being disagreeable but that doesn’t make it harassment or abuse.
People disagreeing isn't an issue. People are free to hold whatever opinions they like, the manner of which they express them is the issue - harassment through emojis.

I only use it in a positive manner. It increases your reaction score so it was clearly intended to be a positive thing.

When I find there is some ambiguity of the intention of a laugh I simply choose a different reaction if I really feel the need to add one.

If we see pattem like that, it is considered a violation of the trolling rule. Normally the first offense would result in a warning to stop, followed by suspensions and a ban if the problem persists.

I must just be old and out of touch, but I don't get the angst over an emoji. I couldn't give a frick what emoji people put on a post of mine.
That's one of the great things about getting older. You just don't care what anyone thinks anymore. I quit using emoticons (!) back in like '06 or so because it felt like living in a cartoon. Now that's what the OS looks like.
