Removing engraving

I want to sell my iPad 3 (32GB Wifi) but I had engraving done it it with a 'If found email xxx for return' message on it but I wan to upgrade to the 64GB+3G model for travelling to replace my old MBP.

Anyone know of a way that wont ruin it?

It's like when someone gets a tattoo and they don't think about how it will look when they turn 80. You're SOL other than covering it with a skin or case. Since it is ENGRAVED* you can't just wipe it off.

There is no way it will be like new (un-engraved) again, but you could get some really fine sandpaper and sand it down. But it will look bad.

If it were me, I'd get an engraver to nuke out the whole thing i.e. engrave a rectangle (with roundy corners of course) on top of the message to obliterate the whole thing.

This is probably your best bet
A skin, case or cover doesn't do you any good if you are selling it

Scratching it out yourself with sandpaper or burnishing it yourself would most likely look really bad

Getting a professional engraver to do as suggested above is probably going to give you the best results, but it will still be obvious

Laser engraving is the technical term for when apple 'engrave' something.
Anyway because of this I'm thinking the actual engraving is super shallow...SO with that in mind surely blurring it or making it a solid 'bar' shape engraving wouldn't look THAT bad, not everyone's as OCD as most people on this forum. Justsaying

The general consensus seems to be 'You're a stupid' follow by 'Just draw over it with something generic...'

I'll ask around at the local trophy shops.

Haha no, Doylem uses his feet rather than a truck, scouring the countryside in search of scantily-clad women and pythons. Luckily for us, he takes wonderful piccies for us to admire while on his search.

Back to the engraving, could you take a before and after shot so we can see how it turned out?

I didn't see where anyone called you stupid or implied such
You asked for suggestions, and they were given, some more practical than others

It can't be "removed", but it can be modified or engraved over

Not just this thread but other's I've found on this and other forums etc, seems engraving is never smart if you plan on reselling to upgrade, to be honest I never planned on it either but hey, times change.

Will let you all know how it turns out.

Sorry for the stupid question, but exactly how did you think there was a possible way to un-engrave an iPad? I mean it is "engraved" (cut, carved, etched) into the iPad's aluminum backing. What could someone possibly suggest that would undo that?

As was said, it's laser engraved meaning it almost more like blackening the surface of the aluminium and perhaps a minute burn into the surface than an actual cut of a proper engraving tool, like when you get your name engraved/cut into a gold bracelet or something.

More burned in really than cut in.

Hay, I engraved on my iPod 'live long and prosper'. I figured I can't go wrong with it even if I wanted to sell it. Just remember in the future think long and hard before you engrave again. No names, no numbers, unless it 1s and 0s.

The texture of the surface is the problem. Had it been shiny like the touch you could buff it out. Maybe post a pic so we can see the size and give a suggestion of what to do.

I'll never understand why anyone would get any tech product engraved. That seems pointless

Go to a blacksmith and have him fill the engraving with aluminum haha if that's even possible...
