With the 16E you will get a slightly faster processor and better battery life than your 15 Pro. Everything else will be a downgrade in particular the Cameras, display and refresh rate.

Try and hold out for the 17 Air, that will be an actual upgrade for non Pro money.

I see no reason to buy a 16e as long as your current iPhone is still getting updates. It's a completely unnecessary product, the price has reached a sphere where people who were looking for a budget phone are throwing the towel and people who don't have control over their spending behavior will go all in for a pro model.

The 16e is already on the cemetery next to their speaker and the nerd scuba diver glasses. Apple is still making money, but they are going down. Only numbers, no more visions...

I am also curious if/how I should upgrade. I currently have a 12 mini with pretty awful battery life and plan on upgrading soon. Would it be a better idea to get the 16e, or buy a renewed (excellent condition) 15 pro on Amazon for $639? I am not sure if the newer chip and the fact that the 16e would be new rather than refurb outweighs the 120hz screen and far better cameras of the 15 pro. I do not care about visual intelligence at all so I am a bit torn on this decision

15 Pro is really good for $639 refurb, get it

If you’re used to a 12 mini, the 15 Pro will feel pretty heavy. That’s the only “con” I see vs. the 16e, besides the thick camera bump.

To the Apple Watch-wearing OP, I strongly advise against getting the 16e. You’ll likely regret it because it lacks the MagSafe feature, the Dynamic Island, and promotion. Instead, I recommend sticking with your 15 Pro. The iPhone 16e is essentially an iPhone XR with AI capabilities housed in an iPhone 14 body. Another underrated upgrade from Apple.

I am considering upgrading to the iPhone 16e from my 15P any suggestions on whether I should do it or not?
It was announced this morning. No units are in the hands of consumers or testers yet. Unless there is some critical reason for you to have it at the end of next week, my advice is to just take a deep breath....

and wait.

What if there's a problem with the new modem, or the battery, or something else?

It's just a new phone. There's no rush. Also, no one here can answer that for you anyway - we don't know you or your finances or how you use a phone, so our advice is worthless.

Absolutely not worth it.

Nonsense, not even comparable to the Vision Pro.
The 16E is now the cheapest iPhone, even if customers don’t purchase it the large quantity of businesses that will buy these phones in bulk will keep it successful.
Just like the last SE.
It will also likely be discounted from carriers, and given it’s mid range status it will probably be the only iPhone carried by most prepaid and third-party carriers.
For what it is, it’s fine. The price is very disappointing, but the product is fine.
