I am also curious if/how I should upgrade. I currently have a 12 mini with pretty awful battery life and plan on upgrading soon. Would it be a better idea to get the 16e, or buy a renewed (excellent condition) 15 pro on Amazon for $639? I am not sure if the newer chip and the fact that the 16e would be new rather than refurb outweighs the 120hz screen and far better cameras of the 15 pro. I do not care about visual intelligence at all so I am a bit torn on this decision
You don't get visual intelligence either way. The jump from mini to pro size wise will definitely be different, as has been mentioned. I would go for it and try it out. Use it and make sure everything works and that you like the size/weight of the pro. If it doesn't work out for you, then you know more about what you like and can send it back.

Backup your data locally on your computer and free up some space on your current iPhone instead of downgrading.
Also y’all when I did my upgrade to the 15 pro as I knew Apple Intelligence requires some more space to install all generative capabilities on the iPhone I went for the next storage option up from 128 to 256gb. I used about a little past half the storage on my iPhone XR that was 128gb.

USB-C!!! Use an external HDD for more storage for your 15 pro. Sandisk has a 1TB storage capacity for a good price.
Y’all this is for the win. The universal aspects of USB-C.

Fun fact: I got a USB C hub and reverse charged my Apple Watch from my iPhone.

I'm personally not a big fan of refurbished by anyone other than Apple. There's just so many risks and keep in mind that these devices have an aftermarket battery or ar nearing the 80% battery health mark. So you might need to get the battery replaced within 6 months.

I would suggest to wait a bit longer if you can. I keep an Anker magsafe compatible power bank with me whenever I leave the house, making sure my iPhone 12 easily manages to get me trough the day. The iPhone 16E is a dissapointment imo so I might just get my battery replaced instead of upgrading.

Yes you do. iPhone 16e supports visual intelligence via the action button.

EDIT- looks like Apple just announced that visual intelligence is coming to the iPhone 15 Pro as well.
