but your missing the point of this thread. I dont necessarily want to engage in a possible dangerous situation i just want to be able to set my iphone up in a manner that only allows the person to turn it off only if they know the password. just like you can set a password for restrictions, it just seems logical.

Sorry thought the main point was to prevent thieves from turning off the phone so you can hunt them down

I was sitting at a bus stop at 9PM in a very busy shopping area and some guy tried to grab my iPhone out of my hand while running. My headphones attached to my head snagged it for a bit and gave me the opportunity to stand up and literally kick the guy in the face. I kicked him so hard a tooth fell out to the sidewalk, along with my iPhone 4 which shattered. He took off running down the street. I hate people in general but this really made me sick. Luckily Apple replaced my glass for free. I would love this feature because if the guy couldn't turn off my phone, I would've tracked him down and proceeded to break every bone in his body, much like he did to my poor iPhone.

if you are Jailbroken, there is an app, iGotYa that can disable the power button at the PIN screen and also takes a picture and emails them to a specified email address if the PIN is entered incorrectly... I don't remember if there is a cost

Does it include GPS data too? Because that would be awesome.

right out of your hand!?! damn wish you would have knocked more than just a tooth out!

I got my iphone 3g stole from a restaraunt about 1.5yrs ago. My friends and I got up from our booth and made it all the way to the car before I realized I had forgotten my phone at our table. by the time I got back, it was gone, and when we tried to call it, someone had already turned it off...I was PISSEDDDDDD!

Luckly this was about 1 week before you could preorder the iphone 4, and I was due for the upgrade anyways.

Since then, I have been very cautious not to leave my iphone behind. lesson learned.

That's gutsy of the guy by trying to take it directly from your hand. He definitely deserved getting more than a tooth knocked out. He should realise he's lucky he got away.

My iphone is password protected and I have installed the “Find my iphone” app incase I ever misplace my phone or it gets stolen. but I just found out that someone could turn off my iphone without ever entering the password, thus rendering “Find my iphone” useless…

Is there anyway to require the password to my phone before it can be turned off?

I'm looking for the same thing for a different reason - I have 2 kids with I-Phones and have all the tracking stuff turn on so I know where their phones are all of the time. My oldest has become wise to this and is now turning his phone off so it can't be tracked at times. The option you have requested would be a simple fix for this, but at this time I have yet to find a way to do this simple task.

Probably not too useful. If your kid knows the login passcode, that would likely also be the "shut it off" passcode.

Maybe it's time to use some "parenting talks" - such as:
Hey! Listen to your dad this time! I will only say this once. Next time you turn off your phone while you are out, then you get to turn it over - to your dad!
Yeah, I know, life with your children is never simple...

I once suggested to Apple that they put a fingerprint sensor on the power button, so that only an authorized user could turn it on or off.

Heard nothing but crickets after that.

Oh Snap! Just saw this was a necro-thread!
