I have only 5 gigs left on my iPad and I'm thinking I may had made a mistake with the 32. Wishing now that I had bought a 64. If I brought the 32 back to exchange for a 64....would they charge me the 10% restocking fee? Are they really strict with that rule?

The Apple store is not strict. The sales people have discretion. I don't think you'll have a problem esp. upgrading to a 64 GB.

Seriously, I've exchanged a broken ipod nano bought from Amazon, Apple in ear headphones without a receipt from anywhere, and a defective apple keyboard that shipped with my imac. Technically, all of these returns were outside of Apple's return policy, but the salespeople were cool and took care of me. If you get shot down, go back and talk to someone else. Most of the sales people are very cool.

You exchanged something for the exact same thing. You didn't try to upgrade like the OP wants to do. That's a different situation all together.

The iPad is such new cutting edge product the I really doubt that they would charge you for upgrading. They usually don't when you upgrade to a more expensive MacBook pro or iMac. I'm curious if they charge for down grading since a lot of my m4v movies are getting rejected.

Apple retail is usually no problem

I had exactly the same question, I walked to my apple store at lunch (bellevue) and he said bring it in (even though it is opened) with the packing receipt/receipt and they will not charge a re-stocking 10% fee as long as it is within 14 days..

I called up my 2 local Apple Stores and both said they would charge the restocking fee :(

Anyone have advice on how to get them to waive it?

Box it up, bring it to a store (with the receipt), and ask to speak to a manager.

Sales people (who are the folks that answer the phone) do not have the ability to waive the restock fee.

Managers do.

Immediately following the last three iPhone launches, at the store near me, managers were unusually lenient with waiving the restock fee for all sorts of situations. But if you asked a sales person, they'd tell you the proper policy.

I'm going to give that a try, thanks....it's killing me, I bought 2 iPads, a wireless keyboard, and a case. With the amount I spent on Saturday you'd think they would cut me a break particularly that I am spending MORE money on it $700 is a lot....$60 on top of that is just getting painful......sheesh

When I upgraded my 3G iPhone from 8 GB to 16 GB they didnt charge me the restocking fee. Just the additional 100 dollars.

If you had it shipped just phone Apple and explain your situation. I had the restocking fee waived twice in the span of 3 weeks earlier last year by talking to CS over the phone. They usually are understanding if your returning one product in order to buy another especially when your getting something with a higher price point.

Restocking Fee?

I haven't purchased anything from an Apple store, but they really charge you to return something? That's nuts! I pay for the privilege of being allowed to return something?

They charge a fee if it has been opened. No charge if it is still sealed.

Is that a common thing in the US? I just checked Apple Canada's site and the same thing is listed, but it's nearly unheard of from anyone who isn't a steep discount retailer (like Tiger Direct or something). None of the big boxes or local stores I use have ever charged a fee to return something.

I managed a Big Box myself for a few years, and we just considered it the cost of doing business. It added maybe a quarter of a point to our operating costs on a yearly basis.

I guess the whole debate is exchange vs return... Sure in one instance you're actually still giving them your money if not more for the upgrade, but they still take a hit on an open-box iPad.. The real interesting thing is that if the iPad is just a "big iPod" touch and not a "computer" then why are stores like Best Buy charging a restocking fee? You can buy an iPod touch from Best Buy and return it with no problems whatsoever..
Also, the Apple Store's return/exchange policy should be uniform/nationwide/storewide.. Not fair that one person gets charged a fee and the other person not depending on the store...

When i worked at Best Buy - we RARELY charged the restocking fee if the person was "upgrading".

I'd go into the store and talk to a person with your EXPENSIVE receipt in hand.

My DD is at about 7gb free on her 32 - it has me pondering the 64 instead of the 32. THen I remember, she put my entire 14gb music library on there, and i won't be doing that at all.

So i'm ok.

Until i sync her iPad and see the space about gone..... and panic again! LOL!!

I couldn't agree more....I guess they get the ones who don't speak up.

And that's exactly what I ended up doing. I went to one store and the manager put up a fight, but he agreed to waive it, then found out they sold out of the 64's :(

So then I stopped by the one that is a little out of the way of my way home....explained myself, explained the manager in the other store was going to waive it....and they waived it :D

If you don't ask, you don't get.....and sometimes you STILL don't get....that's when you insist ;)

Thanks for you feedback everyone. :)

Being able to make a return (as least in the U.S.) is a privileged. A merchant isn't required to take returns.

The restock fee is common on many electronics b/c no one wants to pay full price for opened items so the merchant has to discount them.

My 16GB iPad had a scratch on the screen when I received it. I took it to the Apple store this evening and they authorized an exchange. I passively asked if it was at all possible to upgrade to the 32GB iPad without having to pay a restocking fee. The salesman came back and said, "my manager said that was fine -- he'll gladly wave the restocking fee." It obviously all depends on the person in charge.
