I’m going to update to 12.1 and see if it makes any difference..
I called and did the same tests on my end as well. reported itFor what it's worth, I wanted to share an update on my phone. I called Apple support (800–694–7466) and they said they have had some reports of this and it is an issue that they are currently working on. It seems to affect more of the people that have larger iMessage conversations. Mine is 11GB and my wife's is 50GB+. They had me try disabling iMessages, disabling FaceTime, and then in fast succession, clicking the volume up, volume down and then holding down the power button until the phone restarted with the Apple logo. After it came back up, they had me enable Facetime and then iMessages. It didn't work for me, but they said sometimes that is a way to force it to refresh. I also talked to a Senior Advisor and they suggested that I just leave it plugged into power (not wireless like I was using) to see if that helps overnight. The Senior Advisor said it was known and hoped it would fix itself in a few days. If you're also experiencing the issue, it wouldn't hurt to report it so they can escalate the issue if multiple users are seeing it.
They also said it may not hurt to restart your phone from time to time to see if that helps kick it back into sync mode.
Nothing changed. Still doesn’t update as intended and still cannot be forced. Please update with results.
How big is your messages database and how long did it take?I just did a full backup & restore and it fixed the issue completely. Something must have gotten hung up when I was first setting it up.
Only about 10gb. Didn't take long at all when I restored the second time. Left it plugged in, it downloaded all my apps, then maybe 30 minutes for my messages to fully sync. How big is your messages database and how long did it take?
I’m over trying again.. I’ve literally lost 3 nights of sleep doing this three separate times and it takes so long it’s not even done by morning... I can’t go a day without my phone... and I shouldn’t have to! It’s not my internet either, I have gigabit.
so why are you guys restoring from back up? They are supposed to sync even if you set up your new device as new...im confused as to why youre doing that
that is why people need to call apple and tell them so that they can escalate this.Obviously they aren’t for some people.
Who sets up as new? That would be a nightmare. I have way too many apps and things set just the way I like it to go through that exercise, especially when Apple says it’s not required.so why are you guys restoring from back up? iam more so referring to the sync issue with icloud imessages not working. IDC what you do personally but if you think you need to restore to get your messages back youre wrongWho sets up as new? did you get back missing texts? What was missing exactly for you on your new device the first time around?I ended up erasing and setting mine up again, restoring from a backup I took before erasing it as well. Everything came back this time, and it seemed much smoother than the first time I set it up.
100% call apple and report thisIm missing text messages myself after restoring from an iCloud backup. Everything from late July though September 15th is missing. Im thinking there is something wonky with messages in iCloud

what steps did you take to fix the issue?I did get back missing texts. The first time I set it up (from an iCloud backup of my previous phone) it only restored messages back to about a week ago, and nothing I did could get them back - restarting, toggling messages on and off, force closing the messaging app. Perhaps coincidental is that it had trouble restoring that backup, asking for old Apple ID passwords and phone passcodes. This last restore worked without issue, and everything was restored within 30 minutes, leaving the phone on the charger.
