Congrats...I work at a newspaper in Indiana too! I worked soley in production (scanning/preparing photos, building graphics, designing covers, sending film, etc.) but just started setting ads on a bi-weekly basis.

It can be a little stressful sometimes, but I really do enjoy it. I can relate to some of the other posters on this board about the technical abilities of some of my co-workers. It can be rather shocking sometimes how little they know about the job they do every day.

We also still use OS9, but there are a few newer computers in the building running 10.3. I keep hoping my stupid G3 will die so I can at least have a G4!!

Anyway, good luck, hope you enjoy the new job!

Well I got the job. I'm doing advertising design, page layout, and will down the road be taking over their web design as well.

So a pretty exciting day!! And the general manager who was interviewing me also said there is lots of opportunity for pay/hours/title to go up in the near future. So I'm pretty excited right now :D

congrats.

but, take what they tell you with a grain of salt.

no major papers i know of combine ad design, page layout and web in any way. Its obviously a lower budget paper, so they are gonna try and get one person to do the job of 3 or more.

I am 4 years in the newspaper design business, and I do like it, but there are alot of other areas of design i would like to get into.

I share my congrats too. But this is the new reality of lower paying jobs with more responsibility here in the US and elsewhere IMO. Beats the job to to India, Pakistan, or wherever - only leaving Walmart as an option for work. The shrinking middle class.

All i can say from the get go is GO FOR IT-Submit your resume to anything
that remotely or really sounds of interest to you. The reason i say this is because you are a new designer and you need to find your place in the art world by jumping in the pool. You say you are experienced in the softwares needed etc- but the newspaper may have their proprietery stuff and just having various software exp is good enough.

I have worked in all areas of graphic design-more major magazines than newspapers- and must say that newspaper is awful - unless it is for a major newspaper that you can get in. If you want to learn about high production, fast pace , and low quality design-join a newspaper--it is really good experience but not ideal. That is my opinion. Newspapers have to put out alot real fast- so quality and design style- is not important-all they care about is the established format and getting that rag out.

You will need to know about lpi (lines per inch) , dpi (dots per inch), type specing, type design, photos and the four color seperation process vs. black and white. All this is important for any designer- but newspapers and magazines thrive on it. There will be editors, page layout people and writers.

I don't think you are missing anything on your resume-everytime you go to a new art job you learn something new- don't limit yourself-just apply.

Good wishes and don't count on one job- apply apply apply- who knows where your talent will take you for now.

I'm sorry your newspaper experience was so bad for you. I enjoy newspaper graphic design. Sure, it's fast paced and heavily styled. But there's room abound for creativity. Newspaper design is not about art. It's about conveying ideas. If you come at it as an artist, you're going to be miserable. Come at it as a jounralist, and you're right at home.

I'm not usually a grammar / spelling Nazi, but clearly when you're applying for a job it's important to get things right, so:

It's not resumé, it's résumé. Resume is also acceptable, but if you're going to add the accents, make sure you add both of them.

But congratulations on the job!
