I agree with the comments about cost making this prohibitive for the new future... wouldn't expect such a high dpi display until iPad 3 or 4.

I also share the lament on this. Happened the first time I used my iP4 to read a book for an evening. Picked up my iPad to do some web surfing and had a bit of a  experience. Something that had up to that point been impressively sharp now looked fuzzy. Got over it - there are several apps built just for the iPad that I love and overall it's better for browsing the web. iBooks/kindle is pretty much an iphone only experience for me now :)

There's nothing wrong with the iPad screen. It's fantastic. I love my iPhone 4 screen but the actual real estate of the ipad is nicer.

+1, but of course the future generation ipads will be upgraded with the same features as the iPhone 4.

I looked at this thread with a bunch of different displays and resolutions and no matter what I did the thread did not get any better looking.

I consider myself a videophile to some extent, and I compared the ip4 to the iPad at the Apple store. Didn't see a difference really. I'll take the longer battery and bigger screen in trade any day. Maybe if I worked with it a bit, I'd start to see something...yellow screen comes to mind of the made up issues when looking at something too long. Maybe the ip4 has that too and we just haven't looked at it long enough, or perhaps we need a video test and post pictures again?

Either way, if I didn't see a huge difference on my first pass, I'm not going to 'try' and see one, so it must be very subtle.

I'm not trying to be mean but I think you are not a videophile if you didn't see the difference immediately. Heck, even the average Joe comparing them in the iPhone store when I was there saw the huge difference.

I suggest taking another good look.

Again, I don't mean to be mean. ;)

Don't count on the retina display for the iPad. Yes, it's feasible to make a panel like that, however it would be expensive and would require approximately 4x the graphics power (seeing as it would have 4x the pixels). The resolution would be 2048x1536 assuming they simply doubled the ppi like the iPhone, and the graphics processors in the 13" apple notebook offerings would even have trouble with that resolution, especially with games, which is one of the iPad's primary uses. Finding a GPU that could handle that resolution without killing the battery and creating insane amounts of heat would be all but impossible at the moment.

I guess I should not have said "hate' 'cause I still love it. But it's just feeling a little old everytime I use it. And yes, it feels like using a old gameboy screen after using the iPhone 4.

If it makes you feel any better it is still the latest 2010 technology in a tablet... Surely future models of the iPad will come with higher res screens, but like others have said it isn't really a deal breaker at this point b/c there is no alternative... we can only dream until it comes real probably in the form of the rumored mini iPad with retina display. I can't really imagine a 9.7 inch retina display before next year.

I feel better thanks. ;)

I wonder when exactly is that future. I remember Steve Jobs recently saying there will be more amazing products coming out soon, so let's not discount a higher res iPad just yet.

I thinks it's an impossibility that a New iPad will be coming out before next year. It seems to me like Apple is tightly wound as it as, with some of they're apps not ever ready for the iPad or retina display, and the whole iphone 4 fiasco along with keeping up with the normal schedule they have set.

@ OP I think, like many have said, it all depends on how far away you are holding the screens.

I love my Ipad

I have the Iphone 4 I love it. But I don't read books on it.
I don't surf the web on it unless, I don't have my computer or my ipad.
the display is brilliant, crisper tones, more vibrant. But my ipad is more than twice the space.. It is easier for me to read books on. And certainly it is clear enough. It is better than paper. Well, higher resolution, anyway.
I am not telling the OP that he is wrong. I am just saying that every night I choose to read with my ipad in bed, not my ip4.

is there any software that changes the iPad display to look like the Kindle? I find reading on the iPad really hurts my eyes after a while!

Have a look at the Stanza and possibly the Good Reader app as they have the ability to invert the screen colours thereby making the white page black and the black writing white. It wil do wonders to releave the strain you feel. It not insta-e-ink but its as good as you will get on an iPad apart from dimming the screen

I agree with the OP. After using my iPhone 4 its hard to look at my iPad. I can't help but see nothing but dots.

I know my monitors have lower PPIs that my iPhone 4, but I sit far enough back from the screens so that its not a problem.

The iPad is meant to be used up close and personal. And at any normal use range for the iPad all I can see are dots.

Oh and the lack of multi-tasking is really killing it for me.

Of course there will be a higher res iPad In the future. But don't count on a retina display within the next 2 years. We need to make some serious progress in batteries to do that and not sacrifice battery.

I think the next model may be 1280x1024 or so. Just a little bump.

....and processing power to control all those pixels, and technical manufacturing to make a high density display that large, and costs reductions to make it much less than near a $1000 to mass manufacture, and.....

I share the feeling of the OP. I love my iPad and I am still amazed how it can have a lower dpi than the iPhone 3G and still look amazing. Nonetheless, I does not look nearly as crisp as the iPhone 4. Like the OP, I would love to see a 300dpi resolution in the next gen, but it won't happen.

Even though everyone seems to love battering the OP I have to agree. The iPad screen looks really poor compared to my iPhones, and it does take away from the device somewhat.its like having power steering on your car, if you haven't got it you don't mind, but as soon as you get it and then go back, you wonder how you ever lived with it..

ITA, not sure where all the animosity is coming from, but the iPad display is definitely inferior. I see pixels everywhere when I look at an iPad. I was hot to get one but will hold off now that my iPhone seems to be serving my purposes.

Try different screen backgrounds, font sizes, etc. It still won't look like e-ink but it might help. I find that reading on my iPhone 4 is almost more fun than on the iPad because of the sharper display, but if I put the iPad in my lap and stop sticking it 4 inches from my face, it isn't as blurry ;)

Do this, I didn't like reading on the iPad either but then I tried Sepia and I find it much more manageable. It still isn't as good as my wife's nook, but I find that my eyes don't strain as much as they were before.

I do have to say I can definitely see the difference and prefer the iPhone 4 screen over the iPad's, but I still love my iPad. Although I do use it less often now that I have my iPhone 4, but that is probably because the new wow factor hasn't worn off for me yet. I've had the iPad since launch day so it's kinda just like another device to me.

Over 99% can't tell a 720P from 1080P on a 42" monitor at 8' or more (average viewing distance).:D As Don asked how are you dealing with your computer monitor?

Are you kidding?

On my 40'' Bravia I can easily spot the difference between 720&1080p ?!

I doubt Apple will bump up the iPad resolution even a little bit. Because 1024x768 is the perfect res to double-up existing iPhone/iPod apps and have a small amount of real estate left over. 1280x1024 would be nice but confusing for developers and average Joe consumers. Just like how the differing amount of RAM and speed of CPU's of iPhones and iPods confused people.

I haven't seen an iPhone 4 display yet but expect it to blow me away. Although screen size is of bigger importance to me (I paint on the iPad)
