I just bought a new custom configured 27" i7 2.93 2TB 8gig iMac on March 22nd before I heard about the new one's slated for April/May. Today is my last day to initiate a return so, I have to decide if I should keep this one or return it and wait for new one to be released. Just got it all configured with all my data and I've been to a couple of the one to one classes and would hate to return it but I don't want to have a "old" version less than a month after my purchase!

iPhone 4
3GS
iPad 1
Powerbook G4

well only you can decide that. Really depends on what you need to do with your computer and how much power you need.

If it were me i'd return it. But that's just me.

Planning on using the CS5 web premium I ordered to build a website for a community organization and some photo and movie editing as a hobby in addition to normal computing. I just don't want to have "last years model" a few weeks away from the date of purchase! Has anyone ever done this as it seems too good to be true to get a complete refund after using it for two weeks and then just waiting for the new iMac to launch!

OH MY GOD. YOU MIGHT HAVE LAST YEARS MODEL.

Seriously, it's really not going to affect you like you assume it will. Do you think they are going to disable your iMac if they refresh? No. Keep it and enjoy the iMac. Take off your tinfoil hat too.

We dont know when the iMac gets refreshed. It might happen soon, or much later.
When i bought my iMac last year i also bought it shortly before the refresh, and i dont regret it.
I too would say 'keep it' since its a good machine and the new one will not be a "huge-huge" upgrade.

OH MY GOD. YOU MIGHT HAVE A SUBSTANTIAL BOOST IN PERFORMANCE AND HIGHEST SPEED PORT ON THE MARKET FOR THE SAME PRICE IF ONLY YOU BRING IT BACK AND WAIT A MONTH.

Seriously, bringing it back will not affect you much, you probably went by fine 2 weeks ago and you can likely wait a bit more and remember your one to one classes or something. No idea why you need those though.

Don't think like that. You bought it, so keep it. Even if a gold-plated iMac comes out, the one you bought will still be a solid custom-ordered product.

This is also exactly why I don't like custom-orders - you opt for higher power, but then a new iMac rolls around that has the specs you paid extra for, but in the standard configuration. I tend to buy the cheapest versions of the products so I don't feel bad if a new one comes out.

If it were me, I would enjoy what you have and keep it.

You could have built a web site with a 5 year old Core Solo mini.

Nothing you are doing will ever even slightly stress the power that sits in front of you.

Are your *SURE* you can return it? AFAIK you cannot return BTO Macs.

I would return it!

I am also waitting on a refresh to the iMac. First off you really cant compare the mgz of the Two. They are diffrent CPU's. Only if they were the same core's then you can use Mgz to compare. In the old days you would go by it's speed in Mgz. Not any longer.

And The Sandy Bridge CPU are showing a MAJOR JUMP in Speed.

Reason I would send it back.

Even nothing really uses thunderbolt yet. If it becomes use full and you dont send it back you are with out it an more than likely going to have to upgrade sooner.

So waitting a Month(hopefully a few weeks) could extend the use of the system buy years.

Yes there is nothing wrong with the system you bought but when you pay the price that apple cost. You should at least get the most out of it. And the latest tech. at this point the present imac's do not have the present Tech for sandy bridge has been out for a few months now!

Not that it will make any diffrence to apple but if people stop buying and or start sending them back duo to wanting the new system. Apple will have to respond by updating. Keep in mind, Apple does what they want on there own scedual and doesnt really change that! Most Co. Would respond if there was unuff of a hit due to returns and slow sales.

Just my Opinion!

Just think of it like buying a car. As soon as you drive it off the lot, it has already lost value. As soon as you buy a computer, it's essentially already outdated. If you keep waiting for the latest and greatest, even though you most likely will not need it, you're going to be waiting forever.

I bought this custom configured to be the best iMac I could get in my price point and with the refresh it seems as if I might be able to get more for my money. Apple says I can return it by tomorrow with a 10% restocking fee ($260) unless something is wrong with it then its a full refund. Rumors run wild about what the new one's will have as well as their release date so I would hate to potentially wast $260 for the next ones to come in Dec or something like that....(like white iPhone 4 etc.)

BTW this is my first real Mac as the powerbook was just given to me to see if I like the differences from windows and I hate the fact that I have a 27" screen and I have to lean into or squint to see top bar and web addresses. It appears that this is a common issue with other users and no way to fix. I love the mac but this is ridiculous!

I disagree- Def not the same...cars get cheaper as the year progresses and you know the new ones will be out same time next year. Plus you don't buy a car a few weeks away from the announcement of the release of a new model unless you get a substantial discount! Apple doesn't say when these mac's will be released or with what options until their ready to launch.

I want this iMac to be the have the newest available tech to last a long time as well as its compatibility to function with future devices!

thanks for your opinion! I def want the latest tech with the $$$ I spent on this Mac!

I have to agree with you in a lot of ways it is hard to say when it will come out. and yes $260 is a lot of money to just toss away.

We are guessing what will be done to them too. You could aways keep what you got and see when the new one comes out if it is worth tring to sell your system being that it is that new you might be able to get close to what you paid for it! May it cost you more than the $260 sure and might not!. But then you could decided if the update is needed at this point!

I would never say when you bought was a bad system in fact it is a good one. Just it is hard for me to spend this type on money on a system when I know What elce is out there! And what is comming soon(when ever that is.)

I wish you luck on your choice of what to do.

That is how I feel. Not that what they offer now is bad!! Just When spending money like this on a Computer I want more!

When I was with PC's I built my own and could upgrade them when ever I wanted for just a few $100's. With mac for the most part you are stuck with what it is when it is an all in one system. Yes I do know how to upgreade them but for most you can't and if you do! you lose your warrentee!

So when all the people out there say "I hate when people complane about the cost and what they are getting". I dont make what I used to and am a lot more thoughtfull of what I am buying! For what I see going on in the world I feel this is true for more people than before.

So far its a 5 to 5 tie on return it or keep it....Great!
Thank you for some really good points either way...anymore pro/cons?

No matter which one you buy, there will always be a newer and better one on the horizon!

Of course. But in this case the new one is only weeks away. It's a lot of money to spend so i'd want it to last me a long time. So for me I get the absolute best I can.

Now if the new ones were 6+ months away I wouldn't wait. But a couple of weeks? Yeah, i'd hold off.

That's why Im considering this because of the potential of only waiting WEEKS for a completely updated machine. If the wait was unknowingly long then I'd keep what I bought but just WEEKS away from an update leads me to return it, I think.
