Of course. But in this case the new one is only weeks away. It's a lot of money to spend so i'd want it to last me a long time. So for me I get the absolute best I can.

Now if the new ones were 6+ months away I wouldn't wait. But a couple of weeks? Yeah, i'd hold off.

Yeah I'd hold off as well, but in the case of the OP he did not hold off. He already made the purchase and now he wants to return it for the reason .... " well a newer model might be out in a few weeks. "

I'll be honest I went into the Apple Store last week to buy a new iMac, then I saw the updates to the MBP. Because of the updates to the MBP I made no purchase and decided to hold off myself. If there is no update in short order, I'll change direction and get a new MBP and an external 30" display. This way if a new iMac comes out a week later I will be fine.

I'm a business owner and I guess my view is biased in that direction. I like to think that when a product is sold, it is sold and won't be returned unless there is a defect.

Keep your current iMac. You obviously purchased it knowing it will suit your current needs for the present and will continue to do so for the future.

The "rumoured" iMac refresh allegedly includes the new Intel chipset (SandyBridge) and ThunderPort however I would wait until all of the hardware, firmware and software bugs have been resolved and then sell you current iMac and purchase the new one.

You have to do whats best for you!!!!

It is really somewhat simple!! You know that an refresh is comming SOON. Could be Thur or 3 weeks from now!(I Dont know when so dont take this at thur and start a rumor from that. How botherd will you be when it come out. We all know it will be out some time soon and Safe to say it wont be 6 months from now.

If you are really going to be kicking your self in 3 weeks that you should have waited then send back and lose the $260.

We all know with Computers or anything with tech there will always be somthing better sooner than later for it changes so fast. The hard part is that you bought right before the change vs. in the middle of the run.

Does what you bought fit your needs? knowing what thunderbolt is at this point is that something that you will posibly need? We only really know about the ability for storage and displays with it. Cant even guess what elce that they can use it for but I am sure there will be more. Yes we all know that a faster CPU is just that FASTER. Are you going to benifit from haveing a faster CPU or not. If you do video than yes the rendering time is going to be better. I am guessing that you are not a gamer for this is a mac. If you dont do a lot of video then losing $260 just to send it back I think you are trowing it away just the get the best and fastest for the $260.

any other options that may change we really cant guess at this point.

If you can live with the system knowing that something new it out right after to got it! and not toss out the restocking fee so be it!!

After I buy a big item like this I dont check out whats new on the site I stay away untill I need to buy somthing else.

Yeah .. just return it (if you can, because yours was BTO iMac) and wait for the new 2011 iMac

There's always new computer that's always faster than yours in the future, but if THAT FUTURE is a few weeks/months away, I'd wait at best.

And if iMac refresh truly released on this or next month, i'd just say:

ALL HAIL BRIAN TONG .. he's the new king of iMac, at least 2011 iMac

ZOMG MacBook Pro update anyone?

And what was so awesome about that upgrade? Yes it was better than the Mid 2010, and the 2011 iMac will surely be better than the Mid 2010 one.
BUT we are talking about small steps here. You talk as if he would get like 50%+ boosts or something. Maybe you didn't mean it like that, but you gave the impression.

Well whatever. Its too late to argue now, I want to know what out Thread-Starter decided to do....

It wasn't ment to be....

Well I opted for a return and wait however as i put that plan into action, a few road blocks were cause for concern.

I took the iMac to my local retail store and they began to process the return however when they found that it was a special order...everything halted. I learned that the store may complete the return however, it directly effects their individual sales numbers and that was just the loophole they needed to pass the buck. The store advised me that I would need to return ship the mac to the apple location it came from.

I called the 800 # and apple rep stated that the store can refuse the return since it was a special order but its their choice. Rep advised me that the shipping cost for the return would be mine as well as a 10% restocking fee ($260).

I checked with my local shippers and all were over $130.00 for shipping with ins. and conf.

So I sat down and thought about literally wasting $400 bucks for getting a chance to replace my currently new iMac with a updated model whenever it launches and ships....and it was not worth wasting hard earned money for that chance whenever apple decided to release it. (Still a little jaded about the white unicorn, I mean white iphone 4 that I kept waiting for my wife as they assured me it would only be a little longer.)

This is my 1st mac purchase and I learned a great lesson.... when you want to buy a new mac just W A I T because they will launch a new one sometimes just weeks later.

A great thanks to all who posted and a special thanks to those who gave actual advice with logic behind their opinion.:)

Bummer man. I learned the same lesson when I bought an iPod Touch so now I always advise people to wait.

However, whatever way you slice it, you still have a great machine that I am jealous of. :p

You made the right call!!!

I wouldnt feel bad about the computer that you got!! It is still a Great Computer!!!

And with apple you dont always have to wait but when you look to buy a Computer from them you somewhat have to look to see how long the product that you are buying has been out!

And I would do the same at $400 loss just to wait is not worth doing. I would bet even if you sold it on ebay and charge a realistic amout for shipping you would sell it for less of a loss that retuning it to apple!

Enjoy your new system and try not to think about what is comming! As always in tech there will always be something new, sooner and shortly after that, that we would alway want over what we have even if we dont need it!!

Keep Smiling!

I would return it, but not for the ridiculous reason of worrying about having the newest thing. Apple users always seem to focus on cpu speed, which in the case of sandy-bridge actually is pretty significant. But the one thing no one mentions is video card. The video card in the current imac wasn't exactly a high end card when it came out. I wouldn't want to be stuck with that thing for another 1-2-3+ years you'll have the computer. I'd definitely want to start my computer out with the best foot forward. Plus, there's no financial benefit to buying a product at the end of Apple's product cycle. Most companies reduce the prices as their hardware gets more and more out-dated. Apple keeps the prices the same up until they day they switch. In short, a month a patience buys you cutting edge for the same price.

I would not return it without knowing what's coming. Watching the sales on ebay, you could easy unload it and lose less than that. Buying from you on ebay they, also save sales tax. So you have almost a $400 savings you can offer someone.

I'm watching these things end for maybe a hundred less than you can buy them new. I even saw a refurb for only $60 less than an Apple direct refurb. That plus the tax savings and maybe shipping if you include it is a big incentive for people.

This is absolutely the wrong advice to give anyone about technology. Ever. If you always insist on waiting for the latest and greatest, you will be waiting forever. Find what you want and buy it.

Revise your statement to simply say - do your research.

Not in Apple's case where you will have the latest and greatest for the same price and for at least the better part of a year.

Do your research?

I think the best revised statement would be with Apple you always want to buy right after a new product release

No one is saying wait forever just time your purchases such that they always come right after a new release

Even the Mac Buyer's Guide reflects this

Product iMac

Would you buy a PS2 when the PS3 was nearly launched? Yes there maybe PS4 and so on ... if you wait for "ultimate" .. yes, there won't be any limit and you'll be waiting forever

But if you were in 2006, and you need a PS, would you like to buy another PS2?
The same case with us now, there will be newer iMac next year and so on, but we're getting close to revised iMac, so why don't u wait a lil longer and buy this newer iMac, not because we love wait forever, but because the new one is coming soon

*New Imac only rumored to be coming in next 4-5 weeks.....no substantiation so far
* Increase in speed only good if you have a need for it
* Quad-Core Sandybridge cpu will only show speed in programs that are specifically written for Quad-core

With these things in mind, and the shipping you said you would have to pay to return it does it really pay to wait for a new model?

Why are you ignoring Thunderbolt and the other spec increases such as GPU?

2 weeks ago i too bought the 27" i7 but with a SSD and 8gb ram.
Now, when this model first come out i bought at launch when i ended up sending back a total of 10 models all pretty much to do with hard drive noise and also the yellow screen..... I waited until now to get this one but with a ssd to get rid of noise. The thing is lightning and i was fully aware of a refresh before i bought it..
I will never be intrested buying at launch again due to the little niggly things that occurs and the intense stress you go through to keep sending back faulty machines. When you buy any apple product its out of date the minute you switch it on as they are already working on the next new one.
It gets a little annoying for the volume of posts on this same subject!
After my experience i will keep this iMac for around 3 years there is no point holding out for the next refresh in my opinion

I would normaly Agree with you but this time the adding of a new Port (Thunderbolt) changes that a bit. Yes there is always more a problem with new changes, but with them (Guessing) only changing the Port & Cpu, and Video being the major changes. This is less likely the problems like yellow screens and such. I would wait on the refresh if it was more of an major change of the computer or new size and such then just a few inside changes
