Well, I stand corrected - hoisted on my own petard! -and reverses what I said before, now the Apple Store is preferred. One twist is that both Apple and Best Buy waive the restock fee for defective items. The original poster asked about returning an iPad because of the wi-fi connection problem. Would that qualify as a defect under the return policies? No way to know for sure - and it may depend on the store and manager - but I bet there's a pretty good chance the restocking fee would be waived for that issue, especially given how essential wi-fi is to the current model.

It was rather surprising when the guy brought out the box, and it had this giant (2in x 5 in) sticker on it, and twice he brought up the 14 days/15% restocking fee for returning it. I didn't mind because the local Apple store was out, and with my BB card I got no interest payments on it.

I'd be rather surprised if they tried to stick someone with the restocking fee on a defective exchange, though. So long as he presents it to them as being defective and just wants a replacement unit. Unless the BB is rather unscrupulous, that is.

And someone mentioned the Silver Reward Zone possibly affecting this. Found this: https://myrewardzone.bestbuy.com/offerDetails.jspx?offerCode=2863

45-day extended return policy and no restocking fees on Best Buy and BestBuy.com purchases

Only thing is....BB is always a little weird when it comes to Apple products. Which is why just about every coupon they offer explicitly excludes Apple gear, YMMV.

You might double check with your local best buy store because the one near me has stopped doing restocking fees alltogether. It is not something they are advertising, in fact they still have the big restocking fee stickers but they do not actually charge restocking fees

Is there anywhere it is in writing that Silver members get this on all purchases?

www.myrewardzone.com - There is no restocking fee for silver members on anything and you have 45 days to return items. I returned my iPad because I decided I wanted the 3G after all. I am a silver member and there was no restocking fee involved.

From the RewardZone site:

I was told on the phone there would be a restocking fee on an open box unit at one Best Buy but returned it to one closer to my house and they didn't charge a restocking fee. I did mention the wifi issues I was having and I'd rather wait for the 3g. They didn't have any wifi ones in stock to do an exchange if that matters. I'm a former Silver member but lost my status a couple of months ago so don't think that helped my case.

I understand, but I have a week left to return it, if I end up going that route. I feel like I am in a catch 22 situation.

It would be great if we knew this was an issue of the iPad doing something to reduce power which is causing it to lose the setting. Then if we knew this was the case it seems like a change in an update could help the people with the same problem as me. mine is NOT the problem of router settings, etc. that Apple posted. I already checked all of that out. You can just be surfng and it will ask for your password again.

I ended up getting a WiFi to try, to see if I could live without 3G. I can say, in my situation, I'm going to need the 3G, because WiFi where I work is rough, and I've actually found several ways to use it at work already.

Now the question is how long until I return it?

Here's a tip: eBay and you can fetch $500 or more at the moment from overseas buyer ;) Sold my opened iPad 16GB for 550+shipping

You know you lost money on this transaction right?

Say your ipad was 528.94 after tax (6% tax)
Ebay fees on your 550 would be close to 50$
Add paypal fees of ~15$
Not to mention there always being a higher risk when selling overseas (customs problems, getting stolen, etc..)
.....

You made a whole $9 minus ebay fees?

Ebay fees+paypal fees are close to 10% of the final closing cost. So if he sold it for $550 he only got $495. Plus he probably paid tax when he originally purchased it, say a conservative 6% and that's $30 of taxes.

In the end he probably lost about $35 dollars. Not terrible, but definitely not a profit.

Looking at the 3G...

I checked the return policy as well. :( I was diehard for the wifi, but I travel a lot and started thinking about how I could just off the iPhone 3GS and save tons of money.

So has anyone returning an iPad to Apple been able to get out of paying the restocking fee? If so, how?

I previously posted that I was told the fee would be waived if exchanging (cherry hill NJ Apple store), but reading the forum leads me to think otherwise...

Did EVERTHING recommended with setting changes, etc. Still being promted for password. I just took it back to Best Buy ( on their iPad sending this). Got a full refund no restocking fees. lady told me Best Buy doesn't do that anymore. Oh well, I lucked out I guess. Now I have to break the news to my son today.

And the Apple store was kind enough to give me a full return on the apple case I bought for it. So I am back to square one again. What a relief, I was expecting to lose some money today. I really wish the wifi issue I was experiencing hadn't happened.

I'm on the verge of returning mine to the local Apple store. I'm (barely) willing to eat the restock fee, since I've been watching eBay and the used 64 gig iPads aren't really selling. If I could be sure of at least recouping what I paid plus tax (I would eat shipping), then it'd be worthwhile. But I think I'm better off returning it.

Hope you have the same luck as I did. No Fee charged.
