My receipt from the Apple Store says: "Restocking fee will be $49.90 if returned opened"

... but I just think it would be nice to have the ability to "back-out",

Maybe you can if it doesn't satisfy your expectations as "magical and revolutionary"

Many times Apple Retail won't charge restocking fees if you buy a different product or opt for store credit. Considering that this is a whole new product category, I don't see them being to harsh on returns. After using an iPad, I doubt that there will be many returns at all.

....but your not taking into account or understand some the following.

1) They have to pay personal in Customer Service to deal with the customer.

2) Items must be checked to be sure it's not damaged, IS the correct item and has all accessories. Saying this is daunting task considering you have 1000's of products to understand and recognize is a tremendous underestimate. Lots of monetary loss happens at this stage

3) Must be repacked, re stocked and setup with special pricing codes/data base and employee understanding.

Overall retailers lose money on restocking items and just saying it's a "racket" (racquet is used in tennis:eek:) shows a complete lack of knowledge of basic economics.

You're also overlooking that in the United States a store can not legally sell an item as new once it has been been opened. At least Best Buy throws an "open box" tag with some discount. Then there's stores like WalMart and Radio Shack that slap a bunch of packing tape on the package and put it back out for sale as new. They really need to get dinged for that. Many stores have been nailed by their state's attorneys general but nobody seems to be willing to put WM and RS in their place.

A 10 or 15 percent restock fee hedges a bit of the loss they're going to take if they follow the rules.
