I been keep hearing about discoloration of the Macbooks. Obviously this was already a problem with the iBooks, however I hear that the MacBook can discolor much easier than the iBooks.

TUAW weblog has posted a link to a thread in the Apple discussion where someone shows their Macbook which is only 3 weeks old showing signs as if it was years old.

Paying that 200 bucks doesnt sound that bad suddenly... Should I jump ship for the black?

whats the link? i have a white macbook for over a week and it still looks like how it came out of the box.

If the new macbooks are as easy to clean as the ibooks were. i see no reason why it should not look new with regular cleanings.

Can you return it without the 10% restocking fee? Not sure if it worth taking a 10% hit on it.

Which one do you have Combo or Superdrive... maybe somebody would do a trade. I know i would have think about it, since the black one shows dust.

I do not have a white macbook and I'll probably never have one, but it seems to me that if there are so many problems then Apple should be addressing it. That is sort of preaching to the wall and all, but still.

In your case, if you are more comfortable with the blackbook then go for it. I for one would not settle for something else just because of what could be a defect. Also you can't jump just because there is a small percentage of people reporting an issue. I know it seems huge, but macrumors and apple discussions are not the majority population. The majority population probably doesn't really come to message boards to learn about potential issues and complaints. I know it sounds completely off the wall, but it's pretty much how it is. But again, if you feel more comfortable with the black then go for it...if Apple will let you.

LOL Acehigh... Thats exactly what I didnt want to go black because it shows dust and scratches too easily...

If I wanted to return it, I dont have to pay for the restocking fee because it still hasnt arrived at my house yet. Its still brand spankin new. :D

I just got off the phone with Apple too, and it seems like I cant even exchange it anyways. According to the lady, I have to return my whole order. Which wouldnt be the slightest problem if I could return it to my local Apple store.

Seriously, why the hell cant I return it to the Apple store even though I bought it online?

I think the Black MacBook was just an office gimmick so they could flog the whole "Once you go black.." saying over and over.

I think compared to other computer companies Apple has the least complaints. Does JD powers or somebody have a survery?

I Brought a Dell Laptop and Desktop with 17 LCD recently (cheaper then my 1 black macbook total was less then 900 ) The laptop had 4 dead pixels and the case had some marks on it. The Desktop was alright, didnt check the lcd since i am selling it. I had to do a fresh install on both machine due to all the spyware and trail software that was included. Do they really need to install 3 dialup programs (Netzero,AOl, earthlink) funny thing the desktop didnt even come with a modem. Also both were brought in the small business shop. They really should think that out , maybe install some sort of other trail items which will be usefull.

Of course i didnt mind since the price was right. Personally for my use I would buy an Apple and spend a little more. I had a problem with my first Macbook Pro , and exchanged it for a new one with no problems.

Story from TUAW

It also includes the Apple discussion board thread in it.

HOLY COW. if your hands do that to your macbook its a sign you should wash your hands more often, not just for your macbook, but for your own health. its been almost two weeks, i've never cleaned it once, and my macbook book doesn't even look half that dirty.

Probably for business reasons. They like to know same store sales, retail vs online. I am not sure you cant, never tried but if you say so it should be the same for everybody.

But I know if you buy online and had a problem they do offer people replacements at the store.

Apple stock down 2% :) probably because of this return. Keep it help us out!

Funny thing I tried the black one at the store didnt notice any dust! also tried to scratch it with my nails and didnt work lol. also rubbed my watch bracelet agaist it and didnt show any marks... So the case is good :)

But i want to know do they switch out those macbook at the 5 Ave store?? since they always look perfect! They have about 1 year or more use in a 2-3 weeks maybe less. 24 hours a day... plus dirty hands mmmm YUCK where my alcohol rub.

Wash your damn hands, people.
I have had the last rev ibook for over 6 months and it barely looks like I've used it on the inside. I may wash my hands more than most, but hearing all of this **** about discoloration from people who obviously don't clean themselves enough is ridiculous.
Get over it and keep the white one. It's not worth the premium just to be able to keep your hands dirtier when you type.

I must be blind... i dont see the rule where it says I cant return it to the store.
All depends on the RMA you set up.

But people do say the refund takes some time.

Let us trade then! ;)

I would do it.. but probably in a week I would want to trade somebody else for a black one again.

Maybe we need to work out some sort of share option.

or I guess I live in a clean room or a big bubble then i wont have a problem with dust. but i will still need gloves.

But the white one seemed too shinny to me. and i brought a u2 ipod so might have to stick with the black mb. (wish it was shinny tho so it would match my ipod hahah)

mmmm u2 Macbook....

Well guys, just to let you guys know, besides from the fact I have a new pimpin BLACK 2.0 Macbook, they DO indeed allow returns in the store.

I called today to the store I wanted to return to. The girl didnt seem to know EXACTLY what she was talking about, because for some reason when I said "a white stock 2.0ghz macbook" she assumed it was BTO for some reason. After telling her it was the stock one, without it being opened, or customized she said I could indeed take it in for an exchange.

However this was conflicting with what the Apple salesperson on the phone had said. So I called them back, just to make sure I wasnt talking to a dumb employee at the store. At first the guy said I "have to" return it through them. I told them how it was an inconvenience, and I was not willing to go through that route and asked if he was sure on this policy. He then said, Well, "they [the applestore] are not obligated to return it. So it should be done through them. he then tried to give me an RMA number and junk, but I already had one from my first phone call. So I stopped him while he was blabbering on and asked to reconfirm what he said, that I can return to the store or exchange it. He said yes, and further elaborated that they are not obligated because the physical store and online store are two different systems, so they dont have to if they dont want to. At that point i hung up because he got annoying because it really seemed like he was persuading me to go through the RMA process and junk and exchange it through them. He also made it sound like getting my rebate would be nearly impossible from an exchange.

After all this I went to the Apple store and I talked to a manager. He didnt see a problem to this and just quickly exchanged it for me. I asked if there would be any problem with the rebate, and he said no. He even printed out extra receipts for me that showed the exchange with the new macbook with my ipod, and printer all on the receipt. No hassles at all....

I found this as a really weird experience because the online store seems as if they are competing with the physical stores for the sales. The final guy kept on twisting words and stuff just to try to persuade/lie me into exchanging and returning my items through them.

They probably are competing. Didn't you see the thread on how they will offer you discounts if you try to cancel an online order and pick one up in the physical store....

B

Yes... i did see it... in fact, i posted in that thread and it worked for me, if you bothered reading it ;)

However it doesnt mean they are competing. It can simply be they are trying to prevent buyers from cancelling their order. Many companies do this. Tmobile for example does something similar to this extent. If you try to cancel your contract for the cell phone, they try to bribe you with a new phone free, or an extremely good deal that is too good to pass up.

Also, it doesnt seem like much of a competition when I exchanged it today and asked about the discount and the manager wouldnt give it to me.

So are you happy you got the black one... They really should made the power cord black also. Then you can understand price difference.

my solution. I absolutly love this compay

this is probably the only other company I tout as much as apple. thir product is superb, their customer service excellent. I could not be happier, and I have purchased this for every electronic I own. I am awaiting the full bodt sheild for my macbook as we speak, I should have it on tuesday. this stuff relly is indestructable.
