Thanks. Those examples make your point, though quality always costs, and I am not surprised at Satechis price. If price is the priority Apple is not the way to go!

Difference is that you can just buy a new AirTag or replace its battery on your own. I have an extra AirTag that I haven't used in the 4-pack that I bought. You can also buy your own wallet and not have to rely on whatever style Satechi makes. This product is trying to invent a convenience, but at $60, I think its a stretch.

There is NO such thing as 'Vegan Leather'... It is simply called "Plastic"

I have a couple things that are “vegan leather” and are made from pineapple skins. Not plastic, and quite biodegradable. I still don’t call it leather, however.

As for this passport wallet, I don’t like the idea of keeping my passport mixed with other commonly used things. I keep it with me when I travel (we travel a lot), but it’s not attached to my CCs, license, cash, etc. It stays put away until needed.

Marketing 101; just like vegan plastic that doesn't use petrochemicals.

I bought a passport holder that has a nice necklace sort of thing for $10 and just stuck an airtag in a pocket. Never had to use it, but glad I have it. For those with prescription medicine, I put a Tag in my pill bottle for security. Once again, never needed it but feel safer.

I have one of those as well, and only use it when I need my passport. I never understood why one would carry it around and risk losing it, first think I do when traveling is lock it in the hotel safe or leave it at my house/apartment. Only if I plan to make tax refund purchases do I carry it.

The tag in pill box is a good idea.

Hmm I wonder. Is there a standard global passport size?

Satechi recently came out with a Find My wallet that's designed to work with a passport, allowing you to keep tabs on your most important documents when you're traveling.

satechi-wallet-1.jpg

Priced at $60, the Passport Cover with Find My is made from a simple but attractive black vegan leather material. It has a book-like shape and it is sized to hold a passport on one side, with four card slots for IDs and credit cards on the other side. There's also a pocket that can be used for holding money or an airline ticket.

Unfortunately, there is no strap, zipper, or other closure method included, so if you have it stuffed with several things, there is a possibility that something could come out. Cards slot into the holders and there's also a holder for the passport, but it would be nice to have an extra layer of security keeping everything closed.

Satechi's Passport Cover can be added to the Find My app alongside AirTags and other Find My-equipped devices. It is able to be tracked through the "Items" tab in the Find My app, and setup is as simple as pushing a button and holding it near the iPhone.

All of the Find My features are included, so the Passport Cover can be tracked on a map with directions to it, it can play a sound out loud, and you can get alerts when it is left behind and separated from your iPhone. Find My devices use the Find My network when you're out of range, so if someone's iPhone is near the Passport Cover, you'll be updated with its location.

satechi-wallet-3.jpg

There is a built-in battery that Satechi says lasts for up to five months. It can be recharged using Qi, Qi2, or MagSafe, so while there is no cable to hassle with, you do need to have a wireless charger available. I much prefer the Qi-based charging to charging with a cable, and there is a ring on the front that lets you know where to charge.

The four card slots inside the Passport Cover have RFID protection to prevent card skimming from contactless credit cards for peace of mind.

satechi-wallet-4.jpg

I haven't had the Passport Cover on hand long enough to test its longevity, but the material is soft to the touch, pleasant to hold, and it feels durable. It is worth noting that while Satechi calls this a vegan leather, the texture does not resemble leather and it will not develop the same patina over time.

Bottom Line

There are passport holders that have built-in slots for AirTags, but Satechi's Passport Cover is sleeker and more convenient with built-in wireless charging. There are also several other Find My passport holders on the market, but many of them are more expensive. Some are cheaper, but for something as important as a passport, it's a good idea to go with a recognized brand.

If you're someone who travels often or if you have a big trip coming up where you want to make sure you can keep an eye on your passport, Satechi's Passport Cover is worth considering.

How to Buy

Satechi's Passport Cover with Find My can be purchased from the Satechi website or from Amazon for $59.99.

Sorry, what does

"vegan leather material"

mean?

What is the point here? Oh Yeah, you're relying on some really, really, dumb thief that has completely bypassed the modern world to leave your passport in the wallet after stealing it. OK, got it.

Or maybe this only because one can't keep track of their own passport. So this is for really, really, dumb passport holders. After passport control there is no reason for your passport to NOT be securely attached to one's body or locked in a safe. Really?

Having worked in other countries (including 3rd world) for months at a time across years I have never not known exactly where my passport was located. It is one's lifeline, but I suppose there are people that do not inform the US embassy when they visit a country, do not have backup photos of their passport, and do not have a secure, next to the body storage location (or safe), for their passport. All of which are more important than a silly little device that allows you to be tracked. And no I would never put my credit cards in the same location as my passport. Credit cards have to be accessible, passport not so much.

But I guess scare tactics work to separate people from their money.

Honest question.

If you are traveling, possibly in a foreign country, is misplacing your passport really enough of a concern to put an AirTag on it?

If I’m away, my passport never leaves my possession while I’m out and about, and when back in the hotel room, it’s somewhere secure, possibly the lockbox depending on the situation.

Yeah, I only carry it on my neck when getting through airports and never any other times.

Well. I could see it being helpful if you had it tagged, it was in the ‘safe’, and then suddenly it’s moving while you’re out to dinner?

I prefer AirTags since they support Precision Finding. I'm not aware of any 3rd party Find My devices that support it, though I would consider purchasing one if it became available.

I feel like I got more false positive Left Behind notifications when I was using an iPhone without Precision Finding support.
Came here to say exactly this. I’d been tempted to buy a few of these credit card shape trackers too, but as far as I know none of them offer precision finding either.

I'm not sure that "All of the ‌Find My‌ features are included" can be said of a device that doesn't support UWB precision locating. I'm still waiting for a non-Apple device that will do that.

One issue seldom addressed is the tone of the "Find My" alert. As people get older, their hearing range changes - it happens. They lose the ability to hear high tones. And I'm guessing - no judgment - that older people are more likely to misplace their keys, wallet, etc.

When I use Find My, for a device that has an AirTag, I have to ask someone else to listen for the tone. Other tracker vendors have addressed this issue by having their audio alert be a cycling series of tones from low to high. That way, at least one "beep" or two can be heard before the tone frequency goes out of range.

So, if you are getting a tracker to find your stuff, it might be worthwhile to inquire about the frequency of the alert tone to ensure it's within your hearing range.

I wound up adding an AirTag to an existing passport holder after I accidentally left my passport in the safe when I checked out in City A and did not realize I had done so until I got off the train in City B, within the same country, 4 hours later. Unfortunately my hotel had already rented out my room and the cleaning staff had failed to check that the safe had been emptied, so I wasn't even able to confirm that the passport was still there until the next day.

If I'd attached an AirTag I would have gotten a reminder when I was leaving the hotel, or at least been able to more easily confirm it was still there. I definitely get false positives on occasion from my keys, but I'll take a false positive over the level of stress I went through with that dumb-ass move any day of the week.
