Ridiculously big phones

I'm looking at upgrading my iPhone 4 finally and I'm not interested at all in this whole phablet thing and I don't have American hands either so I don't need a fat phone.

Where can I get myself a sensible phone these days that doesn't look like I'm holding a tablet to my eat like every other idiot?

I'd buy an iPhone 5 but they're already outdated. I don't want any phablet recommendations thanks.

There are many choices - Moto X (2013 or 2014), Sony Z3 compact, a bunch of Lumia phones etc.

Yeah, I posted here to get some alternatives other than Apple. No Windows Phones though either thanks... The width of my 4 is perfect with a feather case I just need something newer.

Xperia z3 compact, iPhone 6, or many choices of 5-5.2" phones.

Now I personally really like the 5" screen size, but there was a time not too long ago that I was reluctant to go above the 4" iPhone.

It's not so much the height of the things its the width in your hand and considering as I said I don't have American hands most of the latest Samsung phones just don't do it for me. I'm thinking around the 4 to 5" width or so in order to be comfortable in the hand with something about the size of the iPhone 6 standard as a cut off.

Moto X 2014 - whilst a hardware improvement over 2013 model - was spoiled by going to 5.2" in my honest opinion.

Z3 compact has almost same blueprint as the iPhone 5S whilst offering all the top specs and micro SD support in most bigger flagships and is cheaper than the Galaxy Alpha.

iPhone 5S is not as outdated as you would think, indeed geekbench scores show its not that far behind the iPhone 6 so will offer an excellent user experience for a few more years yet.

I'd take a look at a number of Lumia phones, WP8.1 is a great OS, and I love the design of the Nokia phones.
For Android the S5 is on my short list
For iOS8, the iPhone 6, its larger then the 5 but not a phablet.

I don't American hands are the driving force for phablets either, I believe the larger phones have been selling quite well outside of the US.

The Z3 Compact and Galaxy Alpha are right in my size range, the Nexus 6 however I just don't get phones that are that big you can't operate them with one hand and look almost as big your head when you're holding it next to it. Don't even get me started with people who try to use things like a Galaxy Note as a phone.

I think they're two good options I'm going to have to look at in store.

The other thing with that is that I'm not really a tablet person, tried it and it sucked... I'll be sticking with laptops until things like the Microsoft Surface become much more mature... For all that they offer tablets just don't do enough for me yet and if I want to read a book or magazine despite the way things are going I'd still rather pick up a hard copy.

My 13" MacBook Pro is small and light enough and gives me way more options than any tablet.

You must be one of those annoying people who tries to hold a conversation via text message. If I want to actually read something I use a laptop rather than being stuck in a monodimensional world of attempting to do things on a tablet with lite apps.

As I said, I wont be going anywhere near tablets until things like the Microsoft Surface and competitors become way more mature. I'm only seeing the beginnings of a tablet I'd even find remotely useful for what I do with the Surface 3 getting somewhere close to being a usable replacement for my laptop.

iOS and Android are great for phones but Tablets are pointless. Anyways, real tablets are a matter I'll debate when Intel finally release some chips that are worth looking at again next year.

Exactly, a phone might be a toy, but a computer or anything resembling it is a tool and android/iOS tablets just aren't great tools.

What's the point of a smartphone, if you won't use it as a phone too ?

Who are these people that don't make phone calls anymore ? Robots ? Are people afraid to interact with another live human being on the other end, and just prefer the cold contact of a text message ? So sad, where society is going, that live phone calls are becoming less common.

I use large phones + make phone calls to run my business. Dealing with clients all day long, I MUST use the phone. Plus a large phone like a Note is a must have, and a tool needed to run business.

I don't see the point of a tiny phone, that's just a toy then. If you want a small phone and not a large smartphone, just get a dumb phone old flip phone + keep the laptop for surfing web, emails, spreadsheets, etc...

Plenty of people with giant phones use some form of Bluetooth to communicate. The LG headphones that people wear around theit necks are very popular. If I had a phone that was 6", I would rarely hold it to my ear.

I still use apps, I have just never gotten into the whole tablet experience... Whats the point of apps on a device that big when you can only do about a third of things you can do with a laptop with crappy tablet "apps"?

If I'm going to do something with a device that cumbersome I might as well whip out my laptop until a real tablet comes along that can do 90% of what I do with real apps.

I've tried the iPad experience... Not even remotely interested, it adds nothing to my workflow and makes my life more difficult by taking away the majority of the tools I use as a power user.

I recently got an iPhone 5s. It's cheaper than it used to be, and in my opinion, still a fine phone. If you don't want the larger display, I don't think the gap between it and the 6 is that large. I chose it over the 6 because I thought the 6 was just too bulky.

I considered the Z3 compact and Galaxy alpha. I used to have the first generation Moto X which had what I thought was a perfect form factor for a phone. While the screen was larger than the iphone 5, it was more compact, and fit very nicely in the hand. I didn't care for the camera and other aspects however.
