iPhone 14 Pro Ring on back glass?

Less than 48 hours into owning my iPhone 14 Pro, I'm seeing a subtle but annoying ring on the back glass.

I don't remember noticing it when I unboxed it so it may or may not have been there (I doubt it was).

Could it be caused by my wireless charging head?

It's fairly hard to capture in a photo but attached is a shot where you can see it pretty well. It's especially visible on the sides of the Apple logo. It does not wipe off, even with warm water and a polishing cloth. So it seems to be well-established in (or behind) the glass.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Edit: I'm not using a case - I had planned to go caseless with this one (for the first time in a long time) so perhaps I should charge via Lightning.

If it looks like this after two charges, I can't imagine what it'll look like in six months. Maybe I'll reconsider my charging strategy, because I had planned to go caseless with this one.

I saw a lot of coverage and/or talk about MagSafe leaving ring marks on cases, but couldn't find much, in anything, about marks on the phones themselves.

Will this happen through a thin case or is it just from direct contact. I use a fairly thick case that works with MagSafe and never had a circle.

Plugging it in can cause scratches by the port. I've had that issue.

Yeah it's probably friction between the back glass and the charger. If you have any type of abrasive dust like sand it will wreck havoc on glass. As someone who occasionally does sandblasting I know 🤣

I use a Apple Silicone case on my 13 mini and a leather case on my 14 pro with MagSafe and haven't had a problem thus far. I do use a shortcut to turn off the outlet once the phone gets to 100%.

If you use MagSafe on a naked phone, it will happen; it is just a matter of time. I think the combination of heat and magnets pressed together is what causes the ring to form.

Yes, because I also feel it affects battery health over time…as I said, the ring effect on cases/the phone is only one reason why I don’t use MagSafe charging.

From past years, through direct contact. If you have a case on like the Apple Silicone ones, the ring will appear on that over time rather than the phone.

Also I’ve never had visible scratches from plugging in a charging cable into the USB-C port of my iPad or lightning port of my past iPhones…the anodised bits/stainless steel coatings that Apple have been using in recent years appear more hardwearing, plus I’m careful when plugging it in. All my devices have been in mint condition when I’ve traded them in.

Those produce a lot of heat. You should consider getting a HomeKit compatible smart plug and create a shortcut to turn off the charger once the phone has reached the charge level you want. That way, the phone casing and battery are not subjected to excess heat all night long.

Thanks - appreciate the helpful responses. I think I'll charge via Lightning for now, unless and until I cave and get a case.
