Omg. Just about every thread on here morphs into Apple bashing. Even this thread simply about a case question. If people are that dissatisfied with the Apple corporation, just simply not purchase their products. I'm not a fanboy, but I take the good with the bad.

Then how do you explain them doing the "Front cover $40, Back Cover $60" split for the iPad Mini 4 which has no keyboard option.

Also it was reported that the iPad Air smart covers won't work on Pro9.7 because magnet config changed.

I guess my point is that because of the keyboard attachment, they needed to make a back only piece. Then for people who don't want a keyboard, they could have made a full case or a front only piece to mix and match with the already necessary back piece. I'm not saying that it's not also driven by money, heck, I think the price alone shows that all they care about is money. (I don't think we'd even be discussing this if each piece was say, $19) but at least this time there is an actual configuration excuse for why it somewhat makes sense.

MacCase seems to have some more information about the new case. $159.00 with an estimated delivery during the 1st week of April for pre-orders. Looks very nice.
Shameless plug for a random non OEM case? This case is a third party leather portfolio not at all like the typical form factor Apple offering.

This was in reply to post #12. Sorry if that wasn't clear. Those looking for a leather alternative case might actually be interested.

I was interested, yes. In the end I have gone from the Apple silicone back (Midnight Blue on a Silver iPad Pro) as a stopgap until more aftermarket cases present themselves.

I'm with you on that. I also ordered an Apple silicone back. I know Devicewear and Moshi are both working on iPad Pro (9.7) cases, although not sure when they might be available.

Get used to it. It's called constructive criticism.

I can see the benefits of having the two piece case but you really have pay for it.
The Smart Case for the iPad Air 2 cost £65 in leather while the silicone case and cover for the 9.7" iPad Pro comes in at a whopping £94.

Yeah I'm actually a bit miffed at that. I'm used to artificially inflated prices with Apple but a massive price hike for an inferior product is just taking the pi..

All we are saying is along with all these individual, seperate front cover and Smart Cover Apple should have kept one more option of Smart Case. Whyy would you remove it from your current line up ? the reason is obvious to make more money on both the front cover and back cover separately !

I wonder if it's because the leather is not thick enough to be in the same plane as the ridiculous protruding camera. lol

Super not-happy about this. I'm upgrading from the first retina iPad (can't remember if that's iPad 2 or 3), and I have a black leather smart cover and a black Zagg Leatherskin on the back, so the whole thing is awesomely leather.

As a graphic designer, I decided to trade in my cool but not-often-used Wacom Cintiq 22HD for a more portable iPad Pro 9.7". I was excited until I found out you can't get the covers in leather any longer.

ALSO, just found out that the camera sticks out on the new Pro like it does on the iPhones, meaning you can't even lay your iPad flat on a desktop WITHOUT a case of some kind on it!? Hot job releasing a professional grade tablet that can't even be used as is by the professionals you're targeting! SERIOUSLY POed.

It's unfortunate because I have an air 2 and their leather case for it is actually really good. If They made the silicone cases separate but kept the price the same and split evenly I could understand it, but why does it cost more than a leather case.

It would be nice if they had the smartcase option for people who don't want to use the keyboard or just have an extra case handy. I ordered the 2-part case/cover with my iPP 9.7 and am awaiting arrival this week. Had the leather on my old iP and liked it, but have no problem with the silicone as long as it fits well and lasts.

Maybe with all the eco-friendly hype coming from  lately, this is a silent move toward phasing out the use of animal hides. As a vegetarian, I'm all for that.
